I made the switch from account, but at a coordinator level, which might be a bit easier. But, this is what I did:
Let anyone who will listen know your hope of switching departments.
Talk to the Strat Department head and let them know you want in so they consider you when a junior role opens.
Start an added value strat piece for the department (trends deck, newsletter, etc).
Ask to shadow the strategists on your account (esp on briefs).
Ask to do your version of a (small) brief alongside them as practice.
Volunteer for new business pitches but as a strategy assistant.
Start familiarizing yourself with research; if your start team has subscriptions to research platforms, see if you can get training from their rep.
Good luck!
That depends entirely on if you did anything somewhat strategic in your past work/enough to highlight. You can totally lean into any competitive audits, messaging plans, audience work, etc if you did it. I listed myself as a Planning Coordinator / Strategy Apprentice…it’s all an exercise in positioning!
