Hi all! I’m an AP, haven’t done any intentional job searching in years other than some networking and talking to clients about opptys. Want to start more structured / formal search. For this level of experience are there best / recommended search firms or sites or online resources folks like? Or ones to avoid? Thanks a ton.

Start with your contacts at your existing and past clients you have done work at and where your reputation is known. If you become a friend of the firm, your partners should not have any problems making an introduction and a refereal. Next dig into your McKinsey alum and personal network and figure out the hidden seninor level roles. It is time well spent and will get you 70% there. If you work with the 3rd party recruiters, be sure to pressure test their relationship, placement rate and reputation. 80% of them are transactional and do not help you much. Talk to them and get a feel of the market and comp. You do not have to commit and have them present you as a candidate. Expecting a 6 month - 1 year dedicated Search in this market. If your network is strong and have a solid reputation, you should be up and running faster. Share your experience and journey so others can benefit here.

EY1 has a number of good suggestions. For headhunters, talk to all the big ones - Heidrick, Egon, Spencer, Russell, Korn Ferry and at least have your latest CV in their database.

Also, talk to people who left recently (around your level) that you know. They would be able to shed some light on the latest market conditions.

What kind of roles are you thinking of getting as an AP exit

Also in same boat as OP. Is it really ~6 months to get a job? I am on a visa and can’t afford search time for so long :/

Depends on your level. I think it’s that long SEM and up

I exited as early ap - (1) use practice leadership, tell them you burning out and need a break(and would considering coming back after a few) - they will find a client where there could be a role; they much better than your office or dgl (2)use the alumni career portal - has a high hit rate if you in the same geography (International is less likely given covid) (3) register on hiperpool and movemeon
