Hi all, I’m applying for a clerkship and have a question about writing samples. Do you have to obtain permission from your firm to use a writing sample from practice, even if you redact names and identifying client information? What do you do if you’re applying and don’t want the firm to know? Curious as to what others have done in this situation.

Maybe…But if you use a filed motion it’s a public document and not confidential

curious why wouldn't you want the firm to know? i imagine most firms would be supportive

I asked permission even though it was publicly filed because that’s what my law school’s alumni clerk guide said to do but don’t think it is strictly necessary.

Every post I see will always have someone who hates advertising or someone who advises others to leave this industry early.

But, there are many mid to small sized agencies that are emerging who respect work life balance. I think the issue with advertising right now is the long hours but if that's minimised the work is actually fun. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion.

B4 S1->S2 this year. My comp is low due to no true senior raise. I’ve been promised a “major” comp adjustment. I am also in the interview process with another B4. I have a fair amount of advocacy at my current firm, but that doesn’t guarantee a positive outcome. I also don’t want to insult said advocates by preemptively accepting an offer in line with what my current firm plans to offer (in 2 months). Therefore, I am negotiating an offer from a low salary that will increase in 2 months.
