Hi all, I'm making the move from big corporate to start-up at a senior level. This I am fine with and can't wait to get stuck in, however my question is on onboarding. They don't seem to have a well rounded HR function, so I am guessing onboarding will be a little light. I am used to onboarding others, so I am tempted to propose my own onboarding expectations/ideas in the absence from anything else... is this a good/bad idea, has anyone else experienced this type of thing?

Yep, I'd agree with all and just make sure the proposal is an added benefit of helping both the org and you, and not a flag that 'things aren't good enough here'.

Approach will be important.
Good luck!

There will be so many things that need improvement. If I were you just note this and start making a list. I wouldn’t do/say anything until you have a more robust list and you figure out which area needs improvement the most.

Be careful because it’s usually all hands on deck and you may be expected to pick up that project for a prolonged time. At my last startup the Director of Marketing played an HR/onboarding role for 1+ yr on top of his job because he wanted to improve the onboarding, but at least he enjoyed it.

Congratulations! And i would say yes. Even just a 1-pager with a basic checklist — you are a fresh set of eyes and you’d be best placed to see what isn’t communicated well to someone just starting in the org to best equip them to hit their stride sooner. Particularly in such an environment where many such orgs can be a little top-heavy at first to cover a wider range of company needs, anything and everything you bring to the table would be helpful.

I would say just be wary in case anyone senior likes to be “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” who may consider these things a waste of time or “too corporate” though I’ve usually found those tend to be the types who have never managed people conflict before. You may just have to adjust your vocabulary to theirs.

This exactly. I’m at my third start up (first marketing hire) and own HR now. They will need help with everything and will assume you can somehow balance two different roles. If asked, jump in. But I’d be cautious.

Newbie Q. Does it make sense to refinance mortgage if my goal is to lower total cost of loan? For instance: currently have a 30 year fixed at 3.25% (loan originated 6 years ago so I have around $50K in equity). I can refinance to 30 year fixed at 3.125%. Closing fee is around $3K. Although I would be able to lower my monthly payment by ~$250 a month, on the long run I will pay ~$33k MORE in interest. Am I understanding that correctly? Can someone explain it to me as if I were a 5 year old🙏🏼

At startups is there an expectation that people are coached as they progress in terms of seniority? Or are they expected to learn themselves? I’ve seen a few people in my org promoted to senior or people manager roles who aren’t doing what I think they should be doing at that level. Some of it is a lack of experience and some, I guess is a lack of coaching or guidance by their managers
