Hi all, I've had this burning question that I just can't seem to figure out. If I've already learned UX experience on the job but don't have any professional certification, should I still get a certificate for validation? If so, what's the best certificate (for a more experienced designer) and if not, what continuing education should I pursue to enhance my career as a Product Designer? Thanks in advance!
Less certifications and more portfolio. A good portfolio is the only validation you need
This and this again.
There’s a dime a dozen certificates out there to be honest. I don’t know that an official certification is needed if you have good practicing skills that are reflected in a portfolio of work.
But if you want idea for certificate programs, specifically one that hone skills and gets you ideas for better portfolio work, I would suggest the coursera google UX design courses.
Showcase your work. The more case study example, more and better chances of getting job
There are certification? We only hire via portfolio. If I see certifications o personally look at that as “a person who takes shortcuts”. They aren’t really useful for my field (product)
Several things I’ve learned as I’m in a similar boat: you’re portfolio, resume, LinkedIn should be targeted to the roles you want - which means showing your relevant experience.
Secondly, reach out to recruitment agencies and open your LinkedIn to be searchable by recruiters. A contract role is a great way to get your foot in the door.
Finally, if you do decide to pursue some continuing education to beef up your portfolio/resume I was told to sign up for a Nielsen Norman class (not the full certificate just a session) since they invite you to their slack channel where jobs are posted and recs are given.
Good luck on your job search!!
Second what’s been said here about your portfolio. Get some product work in there and then you should be golden. ✨
However, if you’re determined to get a certificate there are some really solid programs that you can check out at General Assembly and the Neilson Norman Group.
I personally don’t think certifications are necessary. If you find that your resume isn’t generating interviews maybe that’s something that could help, but likely you just need to rethink how you’re communicating your skills.
I revamped my resume last year and treated it as a ux project. What will hiring managers be looking for, what do I want them to know about me first, how wil they scan for this information, etc.
General Assembly is the best. It’s expensive but worth it, but if you’ve learned it on the job you probably don’t need it. Experience is valid.
It’s propelled my career forward significantly.
Thanks all, I appreciate the insights! I would also like to say that I have an educational budget from work(what spurred my question) and if I wasn't to use it on a UX certification, would anyone recommend a psychology course, HCI, business etc. As a cross-functional learning experience? Thanks again!
Thank for this, all knowledge is appreciated!!!
