Hi all, just found out I’m expecting a little one but I’m nervous about staying in public as I don’t think it’ll be beneficial once the kiddo is born with the late nights of busy season and stresses of the job. Is it worth it to look in industry? If so, would they get angry that I’ll basically go in maternity leave in 9 months? Also, if public is better- why? I just don’t see benefits of being in public anymore. Also, I’ve been a senior auditor for 1 busy season if that helps. Helpppp.

I think the opposite. I have an almost 4 year old and public allowed me the flexibility of taking off when he’s sick or school is cancelled, etc. I have yet to miss out on anything important in his life and have rarely missed bedtime. However, I had him when I was already a tax director (so well into my career) and I do think it’s easier to set boundaries the further along in your career you are.

It’s mid tier. I think time wise you’ll be fine. Look into the benefits more.

I haven’t had kids yet but I’m in my mid 30s so have several friends who have and public has some of the better maternity leave policies I’ve encountered compared to my friends and peers, whether it be accounting or otherwise. With maternity leave and vacation you’ll need to use up you can easily stay home for months and take advantage of the quality time.

Don’t know the exact plans your firm has in place but the leave benefits and sick time is pretty generous and for someone who took (and still takes) full advantage after my first kid I’d stay try to stick it out - milk the firm for their benefits and see how flexible they are when u have ur kid. Then look elsewhere if it’s not a good fit. I’ve been working remotely for over a year (started just a few months after returning from maternity leave) and the flexibility is incredible. I dnt feel like I’m missing out on anything.

I actually stayed in public accounting because of the flexibility to balance work and being a mom. My kids are 4 and 6. I haven’t missed anything important in their lives, can volunteer at their schools, etc. And I was able to take 6 months leave with each child. Are there women at your firm with kids who seem to be balancing well? I think it helps if you can see the balance actually happening in practice.

I stayed in Public because of the flexibility. I’m down to 40 hours a week year round because I need the flexibility of working when I can work

Thanks everyone!! I appreciate your help!

I thought I'd have to leave PA when I had kids, but I was fortunate that the firms I've worked for have been willing to work with me. I had a flexible working arrangement before it was a thing in PA.

Don't be afraid to ask for what you need. I find senior level moms don't and they end up quitting or they are worried about what their peers think, when it does not matter. Find a manager who had kids to ask advice that is similar to you. Remember babies change a lot, children go through phases, and what may not seem doable one week/month/year, completely changes the next. Maybe your career in public will be as linear or you dont get the highest raise or bonus for a few years based on choices and priorities but you have those choices. Public accounting is flexible. I am class mom, I go to all sport practices and games, vacations, pick them up each day when there was school, now am home with them everyday and still work. There are trade offs to every decision and you have to do what is right for you.

Found out today that my gross pay of $240,000 yields the same take home pay as a couple that each make $100,000. Meaning I pay an extra $40,000 in taxes for the same takehome (my partner's in school and is not working). Is this fair?
From my POV, I've recently made the decision to move to the US next year for income+tax benefits.

Im so confused by maternity leave policies and Reed can’t answer any of my questions. So, I can take 4 weeks before delivery and 6 weeks after delivery through California disability leave in addition to 12 weeks parental leave. If I deliver early, does it mean I have more time off after delivery? How about I deliver late? Another question, my due date falls on Christmas time, can I stop my disability leave and use holiday time and continue with the disability leave?

Currently on parental leave and planning on quitting my job once I go back… is it better to somehow call my managing partner and quit over the phone before I plan on coming back from leave or go back for like a week or so and give notice then? I feel like a jerk either way for some reason…
