Hi all,

Looking to join one of the top SAAS companie (Salesforce ,workday etc) in the new year .

I am prepared to take a step back and go back into SDR/BDR. My question is , what is a reasonable time frame until I am promoted to an AE? Assuming I will be a good performer and hit quotas.

I have heard many different answers, speaking to friends of mine in the industry . Please keep in mind I want to be working at one of the larger SAAS companies not necessarily start ups .

Thanks in Advance..

I know someone that has many years at Microsoft, who is currently a successful services seller. They wanted a change of scenery so they applied for an open AE role in that same territory, and lost out to an external candidate.

It wouldn't be a promotion, you are talking about a role and org change. What I mean by that is that you can get a promotion to a higher level in your current role based on merit and time in that role, just work hard and be patient. To become an AE a role has to open up, and then you have to successfully beat out whomever else is on the loop, which is never a guarantee. You'll likely have an advantage in already knowing who you're interviewing with, though from what I've seen that only goes so far. It's also just as likely that you'll be interviewing for a different team, so the familiarity advantage goes out the window.

I typed all that to say that it's far easier to get a promotion than it is to get a new job.

Thank you for your response mate . Can you advise on any tips in that case . I'm currently working as a key account manager and have been extremely successful bringing in new business through consultative sales .

I assumed I had to start at the bottom of the ladder in Tech especially at one of the large companies....

I'd suggest broadening your search to small and mid-market at the same tip tier companies you are looking at. Lateral movement is easier, and gives you invaluable experience at the company. Shoot for the moon, and land comfortably among the stars.

Always have an offer for an AE gig from another company. Then (if you're good) the company for which you work will need to offer you the AE gig or lose you.

This also has nothing to do with getting a new job, which is what the OP is asking about.

If your comp is where it's supposed to be for your role and level, threatening to take another job will not work out well if you're with a FAANG, they will not over pay to keep you.
