Typically, STD doesn’t kick in until you’re actually considered disabled (aka you give birth - unless a doctor can declare you disabled and provide you the required signed paperwork to say so). This would only really be the case if you have some pregnancy complications or develop something that would qualify you as disabled. My firm uses Unum too and I’m in the process of preliminarily making my account and they’re already requesting doctors’ notes and signatures.
There are a variety of complications that could get you STD early. I had my last day about 2.5 weeks before my due date because of carpal tunnel. Mine starting flaring up beginning of third trimester and I worked as long as I could with it but my doc told me around 34 weeks to let her know when I needed out.
Call Unum. The claims person will walk you through everything. I just talked to someone the other day and I was basically clueless - they were able to access all of my company’s internal policies and went step by step of how everything works, when things kick in, hypotheticals, etc. It was incredibly helpful.
Thanks for the advise! I was thinking to do that because the website and my company Hr page has zero info.
It depends on the company’s ST disability plan. I’d call and find out. Sometimes you need a doctors note to be able to take time before the baby comes
Sometimes for the 2 weeks before giving birth (but if your due date is not when you deliver it can be adjusted). I haven't gone thru this yet though.
I was just wondering about that!
My company (through prudential) says 4 week before due date can be short term disability. Apply and handle via prudential and need Dr notes etc.
