Hi all. My wife and I are working with a RE as we are a same sex couple and need the fertility clinic to complete the insemination process. My wife’s a clean bill of health for everything except a 3.8 TSH level. She is on synthroid to get it down and it’s up to us if we want to try with our first IUI in three days. The RE recommends it’s not as low as they’d like (2.5) and that >2.5 increases risk of miscarriage. I guess I’m looking for stories where you’ve been successful >2.5?
No experience with this level being elevated, but same sex couple here too and going through the same process. To me it would depend how much donor sperm you have (if the supply is limited or is it’s feasible to get more if needed). If the recommendation is to stay on synthroid an wait this cycle out to try next month, might make sense to wait just to be sure you don’t waste the donor sperm if the supply is limited. If it were me and they were pretty confident the level would go down over that wait time, I’d probably wait.
Sorry to hear that OP and best of luck for you two! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Just want to comment and give some hugs and love!!! ❤️❤️❤️
At my last Endo appt - my synthyroid was in the 7ish range. On medication now to get it down. Endo said the same thing - will increase the likelihood of miscarriage. I know it sucks to have to wait, but I guess if it were me - I’d prefer waiting to the alternative. Either way, it sucks. Best of luck.
SC1, thank you. good luck on your journey as well!
Hi! It’s not a complete success story (as yet, fingers crossed), but my wife and I (also same sex couple) have been going through the process for a long while now. Her thyroid levels, before a recent IVF transfer, were also high (3.5), and they put her on levothyroxine. It didn’t take long for her thyroid levels to get down to where our RE wanted them. I say that to say your wife’s levels may lower/get to where they need to be in a short amount of time, time enough to coincide with your IUI. Worth checking with your RE to see just in case. And if you do have to wait a month, wishing you patience and hope. Good luck to you both!
Thanks S1! I hope it’s good news for you both! ♥️

I also had elevated TSH and unexplained infertility. We did 3 IUI against the doctors recommendation as he deemed it a waste of time, but wanted to respect our pace. It was a waste of 3-4 months. We had two subsequent successful IVF rounds that each gave us a viable pregnancy and birth.
Regarding TSH: our doc had me work with a separate endocrinologist to get TSH under control. Highly recommend this as thyroid is not an RE’s speciality/ area of primary concern.
(Hetro couple FWIW)
Thanks for taking the time to share your journey so far SM1. I hope we can get her TSH down quickly. Great advice asking for endo specialist. Will keep in mind if we don’t see a decrease quickly. Congratulations on the successes of IVF!
Not same but after two chemical pregnancies during natural trying my doc ran some tests and my thyroid antibodies were high but TSH was barely high. But they sent me to an endocrinologist and he told me rough rule of thumb is you want to be under 2.5 in general for pregnancy but it varies by trimester. He said first trimester you want to be under one.
Sorry to hear about your challenges BCG2. After pressing for more information from the clinic they told us about the antibodies being the more important piece and have suggested we check those levels So now, my wife has gotten the TSH antibody test and we’re awaiting results to see what’s going on.
