I had a colleague who felt I was undermining their work and setting them up for failure. This was probably because I was tired of explaining basic excel for the 100th time, and that frustration came through. Once I realized this and changed my level of interaction with them, this helped a lot. Now, I also happened to have a great manager who supported me to the end and made sure that the messaging behind my exit from certain conversations was clear. The point is that sometimes it’s also understanding why people changed. Maybe this is something you can suss out?
It seems you’ve already caught on to this, but make sure you cover yourself in email so there’s a reference of the good work you’ve completed and the terms under which you and your coworker are operating. This should help support you in the event the relationship sours or there are any doubts.
(cont.) This colleague was previously very friendly and helpful, and I’m taken aback by his doubting my areas of expertise and being cold. He’ll email over my emails and the client will respond that I handled their question. Anyone experienced this before? Today he emailed over something I said I was working on after twenty minutes. I can’t help but feel like this wouldn’t be happening if I was a guy.
Sorry that you are in this position. Find out if you are the only one at the receiving end or if he does this with other colleagues. If the answer is he is doing this with just you, bring up the topic in a humorous way. Approach tactfully and diplomatically. Doesn’t matter if he is doing this because you are a female or not, the idea is to figure out how to deal with people like him in the future. Trust me, there are many out there like him and it could be a her too.
