Hello All,
Is there anyone that knows and entry remote Tech recruiting roles(that pay well)? I’m currently working at Apple as a technical specialist in Washington, DC , I am a recent college grad(Dec 2021) & I’m looking to transition into QA. Can anyone point me in the right direction to where I should apply for this type of position or any referrals? TIA!
First, ask your manager how you align with your role’s expectations. Frame the conversation around your performance, and growth trajectory. Confirm if you’re where a Junior should be within your role.
Second, do some digging to learn your company’s unique salary band for the role. Your company might be underpaying everyone.
Or your manager might be aware that you’re having to grow into your role and develop some skills.
If you like the new role and the compensation potential, start networking with others in similar roles, and interview for roles that have higher salary bands.
Either way, if you like this work, your salary will eventually correct itself.
Acknowledging that you are not traditional in that path so you should not expect to be near the average, or even above the bottom necessarily. You should require much more training and hand holding than a new hire in that area. Low pay is the tradeoff for you being in that position.
Talk with your leadership about expectations and level setting. If you're performing at X level after 6 months then you would be hoping for compensation that reflects it. Get both sides to agree. If they can't/won't then treat it as a paid internship and make a lateral move making more to do the same thing somewhere else.
Also keep in mind that avg is almost irrelevant when discussing with a single company. Especially if they are not average in that area. They might value other groups more so all of the people in your group might be underpaid compared to the average. Assuming the average is even correct...
What’s the new role? As for what to do - I’d approach them about pay ASAP. Let them know about the market research you’ve done, how you’re excited about this challenge, and also be sure to make the market rate HIGHER than what it is by a few K. So when they say they’ll pay you at the lowest point - it’s better off because you bumped it a bit.
How open is your relationship with your boss? It would be fair to have a diplomatic conversation and just let them know you aware. Get their temperature on the topic. If you’ve been with the company awhile and they value you, planting the seed may lead to them doing the right thing. If they clearly have no intention in compensating you according to the market, start interviewing and go where you’re valued. Also, salary tools/sites aren’t always that accurate with your local market. You might network with others in your area to get a sense of that market.
Stay here a year then move and get your salary in line with market.
