Hi all! Staff Attorney who was hired to do something very specific at a BL firm. My manager has been very restrictive in what I’m allowed to do for fear that it’ll get in the way of my speciality work, even though all the partners and associates love me and are always asking me to work on deals with them. Because it’s been slow my hours have been down and my manager is back tracking and saying that I can do whatever I want. What do I when it comes to review time?

I am in the last stages of an interview process and I really fucked up a 15-min talk with some on the team. I’ve already spoken with two collegues and it went very well, but this one I totally blew because I stuttered, was super nervous and could not answer the questions properly. Considering that I’m probably not a favourite for this one guy, what do you think my chances are for landing the job? Can I do something to “save” the situation?

PSA: Two years ago I had a nervous break down on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. An intense deal I was leading closed and I felt relief but I couldn't stop crying. I went under my desk and cried for 4 hours until I passed out. Partner called me on Thanksgiving about post-closing matters and I just answered and then hung up. That was when I sought professional help and started to make real boundaries. That break has made all of the difference.

The last thing I want to do after being hyper-organized at work is figuring out my budget or retirement plan or scrubbing the bathtub or figuring out what to buy at the grocery or planning a vacation. I feel so burnt out I can only just sleep on weekends and can’t bring myself to go out or even do basic self care. I feel bad putting this all on my husband and how would I even have the energy to raise kids??

Am I crazy for wanting to do corp work outside of NYC? I’m well positioned, given my grades and school rank, to be competitive in most markets and for most firms. Would I be giving up a lot in terms of exit opportunities if I worked at a satellite office doing transactional work? Or should I suck it up and go to NYC despite not wanting to live there
