Hi all. The org i work for pays commissions quarterly, 2 months after the end of the Q. I am currently interviewing for a role that i like, but i am also having one of my best quarters and expect to close 500% of target. If I quit right after the Q ends but before the payday, I am worried I will not be paid fairly. I may be capped or something else. What do you think I need to do? I feel that I will need to reject an opportunity i like because of this paycheck.

Be transparent about it with the company if you get an offer. Tell them you'd love to join but you're expecting a commission of X amount so need to push back start date - if they really want you as a candidate they'll understand, if anything it further illustrates how good a rep you are. Or could try to get them to pay you a fat signing bonus as compensation. It's all a negotiation!

I used this once before, but it didn’t work. It was either you want to join us or you don’t. They didnt want to wait.
Fingers crossed this one is different

What state do you live in? Many states have commission laws that say if you close a deal you’re entitled to the commission. However, the law is just words on paper so depending on how shady your company is, they might tell you to kick rocks and/or try to negotiate with you - you’d still have the upper hand as the law would be on your side. Safest best would be to start at the new company after you’re paid.

Negotiate your start date to 3/1. Tell them why - hearing you’re crushing your number will make them want you more . Earliest you could even start would be 2022 at this point - extra 2 months isn’t worth them hiring a less talented rep who can’t crush numbers like you can.

I live up north in Canada. My comp plan that I signed mentions that the company can cap at 180% no reasons needed. Not sure if this is legally debatable.

Best scenario if I get offered within December is to negotiate a start date or a sign up bonus to mitigate the gap I would assume not being paid.

Can you put off your plans to interview a little bit? Been in your shoes and it’s completely dependent on the company, whether they pay you out.

It kinda happened on its own. They reached out to me.

Ordinarily, you should get your money provided you've "earned" the commission by closing the deals within the quarter. That's been my experience but you want to check your incentives t&c

Got invited for second interview for Amazon. Annoyingly, they’ve changed the job role from BDM to SDR as they said they were getting overqualified candidates for what they think is an entry level position. I told them that was disappointing, so do you think I should go for it and try and get a better role or just say no and not waste anyone’s time? FYI I’m a BDM in a fintech start (2 months). Prior to that I was a senior consultant in real estate for 3 years and had my own business for 4 years.
