General rule of thumb is prioritizing Roth IRA and 401k (i.e. tax savings accounts — you could argue prioritizing HSA as well) before dumping money into your brokerage.
personally, I make sure I max out my Roth IRA but I only put in 6-10% into my 401k. I am 23.

Roth IRA is post-tax contributions, and your investments grows tax free, your withdrawals are tax free. Regular brokerage, investments don't grow tax free. Per the Roth, you can put in income generate assets since no taxes.
I suggest filling tax advantaged accounts before taxable. With the exception of an emergency fund which you should have first. Obviously if you are planning to buy a house you will need taxable money but equity funds may not be the best place for it.
Hi all thanks for the info! I have an emergency fund, already contributing 401k to company match, adding to HSA, and maxing Roth. I would like to know what investments to choose for Roth vs regular brokerage (if there should be a difference) since Roth income grows tax free.
Thank you A1 that’s very helpful!
If you have any fixed income funds, I would put those on 401k. You want the highest expected growth in Roth accounts. In taxable I put index etfs. SP 500 etf is good because usually all dividends are qualified and taxed at capital gains rates instead of ordinary.
Ideally. My 401k does not allow separate in vestments for Roth and traditional so I can’t put all fixed income in one and equity for the other. If you only have Roth 401k, and don’t want fixed income, that is a good place for growth.
I don’t see much difference between IRA and 401k other than one has limited fund options.
