Hi all!
Thoughts on living on the Wharf?
Soulless or fabulous? I work in Tyson’s but want to be closer to art and cultural events DC has to offer

I’d wager 100% of the people saying “soulless” do not live anywhere near the Wharf. Y’all, don’t talk about stuff you don’t know. I live in SW a 7 min walk from the Wharf and love it. SW has a lovely neighborhood vibe, tons of open green park space, waterfront, walkable to Navy Yard, everything at the Wharf. It’s great I highly recommend.

I mean it’s soulless compared to Georgetown, west end, admo, DuPont, u street corridor, and the nice parts of Shaw. Hard to argue that?

Getting to/from the wharf is not that easy. The walk to the metro isn’t terrible but Ubers are generally expensive from there. The traffic is also horrendous if there’s an anthem event if on the weekend making Ubers even more expensive.

Every restaurant and bar is pretty expensive besides shake shack and falafel inc, but there’s some nice dining and bar options.

They do lot of public events which can be fun. You’re close to the Jefferson memorial and Holocaust museum but the mall is a little more of a hike.

I suspect it’d be a soulless nightmare. That’s just my impression though.

Fine to visit. Not a place to live. Navy Yard is close and much more livable.

Soulless. It looks like any other town center development in the dmv suburbs

Ummm soulless … sure, I guess (as if any new development has history, culture or “soul”)

If you want “soul” you’ll need to find an older neighborhood.

I can assure you it is a much better experience than being out in Tyson’s

It’s gonna be as soulless or fabulous as you make it 🤷🏻‍♂️ People love to hate on it out of some weird romanticization of living in shitty old places with “character,” but it’s got some of the newest apartments in DC, close to the Mall & Navy Yard, and a good selection of restaurants, entertainment venues, etc.

If you can stomach the rent, you’ll probably like it.

What about Mt Vernon Triangle is less soulless than the warf, in your opinion? I would argue that MVT is actually more soulless.

Great for shagging congress people living on their house boats.

It’s not as soulless as Tysons but it’s close. For the same price you could live in a number of better neighborhoods like AdMo or Dupont (would be older building but again not soulless). But other parts of SW are also nicer, just don’t live ON the Wharf.

There’s a reason why we jokingly refer to the Wharf as DC Disney.

Rosslyn and courthouse are for poors

I live at Buzzard Point (in between the Wharf and Navy Yard) because as the emerging neighborhood on the waterfront it’s more affordable but those two neighborhoods are walkable from here. I like it, but I grew up on a river and being able to be on the river helps me not feel as homesick.

The Wharf does have a lot of events particularly concerts since it has several stages of varying sizes.

Only thing to be mindful of, besides the obscene rent prices there, is the flooding.

I work at the Wharf and it’s convenient but super pricey for everything except maybe the fresh fish market.

The apartments and condos are nice and the view are amazing. There’s very few “chain” restaurants and they have a diverse selection of vibe from ultra swanky to hang and chill.

If you want “that” DC experience (ie close to bars, walkable, 20-30 somethings, etc) live near U st, H st, Admo or DuPont circle, maybe Logan circle if you prefer a little quieter. Specifically for arts DuPont circle is where you’ll find art festivals and shows, weekend live music, neighborhood farmer’s market, etc. Not cheap to live there though, especially if you want amenities.

I’m admittedly anti-Wharf, but setting that aside, I’d encourage you to prioritize your commute. I used to metro out to Tysons, and that’s far enough on its own without needing to transfer or take a long walk to a silver line stop. Depending on your preferences, an area like Eastern Market might be a better commute, even if technically farther east. (And has the benefit, in my opinion, of being a way more interesting neighborhood than the Wharf.) Even if you drive, it’s worth thinking about what highways you’d take from which neighborhoods, ease of entering/exiting, etc.

Looks cool though!

Depends on if you like nightlife. There are events in that area but you are very close to so many other cultural events and hidden gems.

Try living in Admo - that’s soulful

it seems very cool but maybe a little overpriced
