I interviewed pregnant (in person, wasn’t showing yet) and didn’t disclose until I had a signed off and start date. In a prior job, I was on a trajectory for a big promotion when I had my first pregnancy, and that promotion mysteriously changed criteria without any good explanation when I disclosed I was pregnant (after being a top performer there for 3+ years). It was significant enough that I met with an attorney. So, I would never advise anyone to disclose during a hiring process based on my own experience of discrimination—but obviously everyone should make the best choice for them! I told my new boss I was pregnant after I had committed to a start date, primarily because I’d be on boarding in person visibly pregnant and didn’t want him to hear it from someone else. It went amazingly well and I had great paid leave benefits subsequently, which I had confirmed during the interview process.
I'm so sorry to hear about your initial experience! That, unfortunately, is a huge fear and roadblock here to consider. One company is very much male-dominated, and in my first discussion with them, I could already tell I didn't want to disclose if/until I received a signed offer letter. They are not definitely my least favorite choice this far. The other two I have coming up seem to align a bit more with your 2nd story! Both the director and the VP I have spoken to are very inclusive, very understanding, and not to mention hard-working moms themselves! I think I'm going to take it on a case-by-case basis. Thank you so much for your help and for sharing your experience !
I’m in the same boat! 29 weeks and have an interview next week. The interview is virtual, but I plan to disclose. I know I don’t have to, but I don’t want to start and turn around and need to take leave that wouldn’t even be protected. I’ve read others suggest that there is no need to disclose until you get the offer/job. Best of luck and congrats!!
Congratulations to you too, both on your little one and the upcoming interview! That is exactly the way I'm leaning as well. So far, I want to play it by ear and feel them out during the interview, and hopefully disclose if all goes well so everyone is on the same page and not blindsided when I do take unprotected leave! Personally, it just makes me feel as though I can explain my dedication and plans for the position if needed. Thank you so much! Good luck next week!
Any feedback would be really helpful!
