Hi creative people out there!! If you are a person who transitioned from graphic design to art director or UI/UX designer, how did you do it? Did you take courses or started the entry-level job again (for UI/UX). And how many years of graphic design field were you in and decided to transition into something more specific? I'm in graphic design field right now but I want to be able to have higher income with what I enjoy. wanted to if anyone would like to share their experience. Thanks in advance

The industry has shrunk dramatically, and companies will want you to know how to code front-end. It's easier to teach a designer UX than the other way around. Most bootcamps are a waste of money.

Agree with the above comment, don’t go to bootcamp. I self-taught UX/UI coming from a graphic design background. Most important is you need to know how to design a buildable product, meaning that you need to know how to translate your design to engineers. You don’t necessarily need to code but it’s a good to know the basic. Start by learning all the UX process

like

This again depends. Of course it’s always ideal to know how to design and code at the same time. In a startup case and big tech, you’re not expecting to do both as a product designer. There’s a whole engineering team to do that. But you do need to know how to translate your design to code for the engineering team.

This is a rough time to move into UX. The boom is over and there have been lots of layoffs. You will be competing for UX jobs with people who have degrees from fancy private art schools like SCAD and RISD. The company I work for DID hire people who transitioned from other disciplines during COVID and went to a UX Bootcamp, but they had experience in our product area BEFORE bootcamp (enterprise software for marketing and advertising). Many companies over hired UX. I just saw a job posting for a company with what looked like one product or one set of very related products and they said they had 60 UX people. That will never stand budget pressure.

Totally understand wanting to earn more money but if that’s the sole reason you want to pivot to UX, it’s going to be a rough journey. Like others have said, the field is going through a rough time right now. As someone who spent 4 years in graphic design before pivoting to UX, I can say that it felt a little like starting over. I had to learn a lot about research methods and artifacts, lots of things that simply are best learned in grad school or on the job. I was only hired in at an associate level UX designer at first while I learned the ropes. The money isn’t guaranteed and there’s a lot of advocacy involved. So just take that with a grain of salt. And please don’t do a bootcamp, they’re basically scams.

Thanks for sharing your experience!! I often felt like companies expect all-around graphic designers in things like they are expected to code, motion design, web, illustration, and more but from what I've learned on the internet UI/UX felt more specialized and more niche. Is it usually the route of people doing UI/UX and getting into Product as they grow?

I made that switch couple of years ago and took a ux/ui bootcamp for almost a year and was able to successfully make the transition. Let me know if you want to learn more about it and ill be happy to tell you more about my career change.

I recently (1+ yr ago) transitioned from consulting to industry. The hours are much better. Total comp is less than what I was making on the consulting side (-15% less). My schedule is much better, and I have a good routine outside of work. However, I don't feel accomplished at my current role and feel like I am not learning as much. I was hoping that I would make up for that comp difference in a year or two but upward mobility seems limited. Is it too soon to look for another job?

Hi guys, I’m debating switching careers. I’m currently a mortgage loan officer but I’m very interested in SE. My degree is in finance. There’s a coding bootcamp near me called Boca Code that’s supposed to be top notch. I’m curious for feedback on 1. Are coding bootcamps actually a way into the industry like they’re marketed? And 2. What is a realistic starting salary for entry level SE? I’ve read and been told 90k, but that seems high.

Any thoughts on the best certifications to get in order to help move forward? I have considered the CCP from World at Work, but it’s fairly pricey to get by the time you wrap up everything. I was looking at both SHRM-CP and SPHR. Everyone that I have spoken to has the SHRM, but that’s also only looking at individuals in a small geographic footprint and within 3-4 different companies. I was hoping to get some thoughts on this from others? Thanks

I work for a small startup and just got a $3k “market rate adjustment” raise on my $112k salary. I was informed that this was due to the market rate for product design doing worse this year than last year, in addition to the company basing salaries on the average pay for senior product designers in “the whole US outside of major cities”. Even so, this seems low to me and I just want to get a sanity check. Should I negotiate?
