My wife and I live just south of Hoboken Station in Newport and we enjoy it here. It is quiet and safe with lots of outdoor/park space (including boardwalk, kids playing area with carousel, miniature beach) and great views of the city. The south part of Hoboken with restaurants is just a short walk away. We get our Asian groceries at 99ranch which is ~10-15 min drive. There are alot of Asians here.
Hoboken is awesome. It's nicer than Jersey City (which is huge) and more spread out than Newport (which has a lot of apartments concentrated in a small space). Lived there 3 years, never visited a bar but still had lots to do. The waterfront and restaurant scene is really nice. Very little crime (at least until 3 years ago), bars can get a little rowdy but the cops and mayor are usually on top of things.
Eta: Newport definitely has a lot more Asians, but Hoboken is very diverse as well (and so is JC). They all have different vibes, your best bet is to visit them all and see which you like best. They're all very good, though, with easy commutes, low crime (JC is huge, so stay close to the waterfront and you'll be fine) and diverse populations.
