Hi Desi Fam, I noticed a difference between the general consulting bowl vs desi bowl where almost everyone in the desi community is for the covid vaccination. What are some key reasons for the difference from the general US population where a large % are anti-vaxers. Thoughtful answers only (and not answers like we are smarter).

Simple: we have more doctors in our families

(1) We don’t assess every thing we intake with as much scrutiny as they do. (2) Believe in science (3) NRIs / Desis like us is only a small niche subset of 1.2B Indians. If we analyze all 1.2B we would also find a large proportion anti vaxers in our country too

PwC 1 - that’s interesting. Did these people provide a reason why they are not willing to take the vaccine. I know earlier in Feb timeframe, even my parents were skeptical, but that anxiety seems to have disappeared now

Immigrants (Non immigrants too like me on H1B) better abide by rules/laws, government recommendations when they are out of their country. They don’t want to jeopardize their stay here at any cost. We are also aware of the fact that healthcare in US is a scam for the amount we could get charged for even lil things

I got vaccinated because of combination of all the points mentioned above plus I do trust Science. I like to do whatever that would minimize the effect of the Virus on me. In my case trust in Science was the leading reason, than just to merely abide by recommendations of the authorities. I also have decided not to avail regular healthcare services in US unless absolutely necessary, because the system is so rigged. So yeah getting Vaccinated would likely help me to prevent seeking future medical help in the name of virus is the assumption.

One factor being the Desis here are a biased sample (more educated, upward mobile) of all Desis. There would be many anti-vaxers in general population back in India and other South Asian countries.

Well I'd like to think Asians in general not just desi folks care for their community and family, but I think that's just smoke and generalizing. 😂 I'll tell you why I got mine, improve the odds of surviving covid if I'm unlucky enough to get it. Not all members of my family can get vaccinated, either too young or a pre-existing condition that could adversely affect them. So I try to be cognizant of my family too when going out and about. 🧐

This is true, public sanitation in India is not in a good state at least for most of the central and northern states. I was thinking more of other parts of Asia when I spoke, like Singapore and Japan. Good catch. 😅

I think we hold the medical profession in a higher regard than most common Americans. So we try to listen to what doctors tell us.

I'd say more informed, more reasonable and try to believe science. I also think that the fact we saw that was going on in India where we didn't have as many vaccines and people not taking it, and what it lead to- pushed a lot of people to just take the vaccine and not be in that situation

Not work related but idk where to ask this. We’ve been invited to our first post Covid cookout. It’s at my husband’s former colleagues place so we don’t the hosts too well but we know there are not going to be any kids so mostly a grown up football party. What would bring to it? Because of the current scenario I’m skeptical of bringing my home cooked dip.

Hey everyone! Recent transplant (26 F) who moved here during Covid (family reasons) so still not quite familiar with the areas. I’m currently living in Brentwood but looking to move. I’m considering Marina Del Rey as I want to be a bit closer to the office (in Venice) and the airport for when things open back up/travel resumes. I tried searching here but didn’t see a lot - what is the reputation of Mar Vista (and if possible - how is that different than Brentwood?). All opinions welcome! 🙂

Currently working at Accenture as a C (promoted Dec ‘19), but I know I ultimately want to make the jump over to Deloitte. I am on track to be promoted to M in the 2021 promo cycle and I know Deloitte would likely knock me down one level either way. Due to COVID-19, it seems like it doesn’t make sense to jump ship for at least another year while things get back to normal. Any thoughts on if it’s better to wait it out and leave after making M (but how long after?) or try to leave earlier? TIA

Does anyone know of where to find remote part time work opportunities for older Indian women? My mom was a part-time after school teacher but has not been doing that due to covid (dad is high risk). I’m having her do some online typing lessons to get her to be a faster typer, maybe find her a data entry gig. She does not want to do nanny’ing / babysitting. She’s a great teacher though and she’s trilingual (Telugu, hindi) - anyone know of where to find opportunities?

Looking for advice/validation. Currently have about 10 credit cards (yes really!) About half are airline cards that I signed up for for the miles, quicker boarding, and free bags- but they carry a $100 annual fee. Other half are random no-fee cards (BoA, Amazon chase, capital one venture, west elm). My thought is to cancel the ones w an annual fee (just bought a house so no immediate need for higher credit limit). Does this make sense?
