Hi DeyC bowl,
thoughts about GC for parents? I got my GC last year and was wondering if it will be beneficial for my parents to get one. I am not sure if they will end up staying here long term. I would‘ve liked them to come here and experience the life on a visit visa but there are no appointments available & don’t know how for how long. Factors to consider:
1. Time to get GC 2. Financial impact on parents given they hold property and pension in India 3. Anything else I should be thinking abt?

You can’t sponsor a GC for parents unless you are a citizen.

If they leave the us got more than 6 months after getting the gc they will lose it. If the file non resident taxes then they will also lose the gc.

Thanks, A1. Assuming you meant “not more than 6 months”?

You need to be a citizen first

like

You cannot sponsor GC until you are citizen. And after that there is around 12-16 years wait for family based GC (for people from India). So might wanna pursue that visitor visa first.

It’s actually 12-16 years for siblings? Wanted to make sure that was not a typo

You need to be citizen. Takes one year if they are already here and you file. Insurance expense is going to be approx $600 a month from Obama care to pay for their insurance.

like

To clarify your parents will buy commercial insurance through Obama care for approx 600 a person. They don’t quAlify for Medicare until they are a green card holder for five years. Nothing is free for a green card holder. Also they need to be of certain age to qualify for Medicare. ( 65? Please check )

First things first, you need to be a US Citizen in order to sponsor for your family.

I see you mentioned that you recently received your GC so depending on how you received it (via work or marriage), there is a possibility to apply for naturalization as early as 3 years if you are married to a USC - just an FYI.

The wait times to sponsor for your spouse and parents is very less. Typically around 24-36 months (please don’t quote me on these numbers) but for siblings it’s more, like literally 12-15 years or maybe even more.

I’d suggest getting them visitors visa for now and see how they feel about staying here. Good luck!

Thanks, SM1!
