Hi EA fishies! My mom is going through a divorce and has extensive experience being an EA/PA. But she would be re-entering the workforce after many years. She’s 57 and very energetic but I know that in this job market it might be tough for her to find something. I’ve already redesigned her resume and created a LinkedIn for her. Any advice on how else I can help her out? Thanks in advance!

Might be good to try temp to perm options or a contract role to get some experience. Good luck to her!

I agree with this first comment as well. Do some contract work to gain recent experience. Take some classes for Microsoft office, slack, g suite, etc. to show some recent work on the tech tools side and follow some tenured EAs on LinkedIn (often posts new jobs before they go on the job board). I also recommend following #hiring and #executiveassistant on linkedin to see posts on new jobs.

Hook her up with a free month of LinkedIn premium and tell her to take as many free classes as she can: entire Microsoft 0365 and some basic project management classes. If she’s out of practice using Word, PPT, Excel etc she needs to get on that stat. And, agree with the above, try temping first.

You can also find great training/ how-to resources on YouTube.

I agree with the first comment. Some current experience would help. Preferably in a position that brings her up to date with administrative programs and technology.

Agree with all above comments! I would also encourage to meet with recruitment agencies and sift out a good recruiter, I started my career in agency recruitment and I frequently placed women returning to workplace into roles (more often temp and temp to perm but it’s experience).
Also check out return to work programmes (lots of companies are offering now, targeted to women) it may also open doors to other opps and interests. Typically there are job opportunities at the end too and you don’t have to have prior experience in the particular domain (ex: marketing, cyber security etc)

Reach out to local staffing agencies!

I agree with M1. Definitely reach out to local staffing agencies. You can also check LinkedIn for some job openings.

Here’s a list some of which may apply depending on where you reside.

FYI age discrimination, illegal but a reality, starts at 35yrs. So return to work programs could be a savvy way to get back into the workforce. Identify employers who promote diversity which often includes older staff.

Also network, a sig percentage of new hires are connected to personal recommendations.

Look at local businesses, but be prepared to commute. Front desk jobs require a lot of organization skills and an unofficial chance back-up other admins if she’s looking for re-entry opportunities.

If applying on-line, mimic the job posting language in her resume. These are sorted via algorithms. Discuss the realities of remote job search: not just for WFH but so many companies screen via zoom, or even on-line timed tests.

Unemployment offices (depending on the area) can offer skills refresher courses including elevator speeches and basic interviewing. They can help her identify the skills she used while she was out of the workforce and how to market them. Practice interviewing.

Learn how to schedule, organize, host, and record meetings (Zoom, teams, even Webinars). That can be complicated and those look great on resumes, esp for marketing roles.

Recruiters are helpful even if only to hear the language they use when they talk about the rules and responsibilities.

Be cautious about signing up on unemployment job boards. She may want to set up a separate email address to use only for her job search. There’s a constant flood of international recruiters who all use similar bate and switch job descriptions - they may not be contracted by a company to assist w a search. They will email, text and even call if they have a phone number.

Good luck to her!

But if he did, what would anyone do about it? Ukraine isn’t a part of NATO, and we certainly aren’t going to initiate MAD over it. We have no sanctions left to trigger. What’s to stop him? Cont’d..

He is my hiring manager so my heavy one, when we meet for our 1:1 i get so nervous to say the wrong things, look dumb. When our 1:1 ends it reminds me how much i don’t like supporting him but it’s not him being rude or anything he’s just very dry and direct but ends with humor. Just venting i guess i don’t know if this EA life is for me to be quiet honest specially in tech
