This isn’t a discussion if you have a choice between Accenture and McK you choose McK. There’s not going to be any consulting firm that is for “us”. You’re going to have to find your way and your people. I know people who have been successful at both places but go to McK.
Pros: McKinsey
Cons: Accenture
Lol the main bowl was snarky but right. McKinsey is just better. If you have a real choice between the two, go McKinsey. Most prestigious company in the world
Rising Star
Accenture is not it!
Tbh I’m at Acc and one of my best friends is at McK, both analysts. Her skillset and prestige, through the roof. My skillset—total flop/fight since May 2019 to get any staffing opportunity even remotely relevant to any of my career interests and/or studies. Prestige, whatever.
However, my quality of life and pay>hers for now.
Long-term, McK probably has better outcomes, but Acc has given me space to learn that any and all large companies are not really looking to see you succeed, rather fall in line and play their game.
A5 thank you 🖤& yes C1
McKinsey opens doors that Accenture won't.
If you have some specific concerns that might impact your ability to be successful at McKinsey, that's another discussion.
I always recommend that people pay their dues earlier in their careers. Then once you've got your resume built, you can start making decisions more tailored to your wants. If you don't do this early on, you spend way too much of your career letting your job and your needs drive your personal life. And that's no way to live.
Accenture is very tech focused. If you’re starting as an analyst, expect to work on at least 1 digital transformation project. We do a ton of SAP work as well (this may just be unique to the south.. not sure)
There are some good answers in this thread but honestly OP you need to add more context. It’s like asking what’s the pro/con of a BMW vs a Aston Martin.
At the end of the day believe it or not Accenture actually has more opportunities for a person of color than McKinsey since Accenture cares about $$$ first and foremost. McKinsey like most boutiques care about and maintain their culture first since at the end of the day they don’t chase $$$ like we do.
Now the oversimplified reason for that is the McKinsey networks are based in the Ivy heritage of the firm (basically if you didn’t go to an Ivy or Ivy equivalent you’re not getting a invitation to the try outs) so those networks are self reinforcing. Where ACN is very much Big 10, Big 12, SEC, etc and so we gotta work a bit harder.
Now remember more opportunities doesn’t mean easier it just means there are more seats at the table.
If you want other differences give me more context will be happy to answer.
And for street cred (before anyone goes there) 26yr consulting, been in senior roles at several big 4, IBM, CSC, EDS and a merc (aka contractor) for Bain, Booze and McKinsey. Like the Johnny Cash song “I’ve been everywhere...” 🤣🤣🤣
A1 - Fair point and yes all things considered you ALWAYS take a boutique over Accenture as it opens more doors. Yet the McKinsey experience (unless you have a sponsor) for POC makes Accenture look like an HBCU.
Also asking about the culture for us!! That’s important to me too
Accenture’s culture for us is filled with disappointment in and low standards for leadership for the most 🤷🏽♀️
Pro
McK without question or hesitation
