I have a friend who went the virtual assistant route and eventually became an executive assistant. She loved it, said some of the same skills are needed and the workload is more "fun" for a virtual assistant if that makes sense. More varied. I wouldn't leave HR right now if you're looking to return soon, but if you want to try something new for a while go for it. Plenty of your skills should be transferrable either way.
I did it and loved the flexibility but haven't made as much money as I could have since clients were pretty stingy
The best thing about being a 1099 VA is that you have no cap to what you can make. You can make a ton if you're willing to work a ton. But that can also lead to some pretty poor work-life balance. I worked as a VA for a while but it was hard for me to separate work from home. The consistency and forced separation of a full-time position mean a lot less stress in my life.
