I did three and a half years in audit after getting undergrad/masters in accounting and getting my CPA.
This year I transferred into Analytics consulting and am now brushing up my skills to transition to data engineering.
My recommendation is to skip the java and go straight to learning python, SQL, and visualization tools like powerBI and tableau.
You won’t get any job close to an entry level software dev without an undergrad education in it, but you could be pretty successful in landing a business intelligence role which will give you opportunities to expand you python skills and learn ETL methodologies, and then eventually can pivot full time to doing software work.
There are tons of great classes on udemy to learn all of the above, and honestly in two or three months of 20hrs a week you can get good enough at all of them to find an entry level BI job.
Alternatively, enroll in a masters in business analytics program and you’ll be taught those skills.
If you want to skip the business side of it entirely you’ll need to complete a lengthy boot camp and grind leetcode but you should be able to get an entry level SWE job without an undergrad degree if you dedicate the time to a boot camp and building projects, but at the cost of lost salary during that time and throwing away your undergrad degree
Oh wow. Thank you for the in-depth answer, wasn’t expecting that. I’ll definitely look into this as my preference was to start from scratch. And having a bachelors and not use it seems to be a waste.
