Hi everyone! I am relatively new to consulting space. I worked with Deloitte in a research role, but have joined an MBB firm at a more front end role. Appearance is going to impact a persons first impression of you, but that’s not limited to just how your face looks or one part of your body. If you are professionally dressed, speak well and are just a kind, caring person you shouldn’t have an issue, regardless of how attractive you are. Just look prepared and clean cut and you’ll be fine. Fwiw, 99% of my meetings now are virtual and rarely any occur with cameras on so I wouldn’t stress too much

Looks are important, but more from a "how well you're kept" than from a physical standpoint. Dress well, get your hair done, notice the details but don't overdo it and you'll be fine. Unless you're exceedingly short or fat, very tall or beautiful the other stuff won't swing one way or another, it's about first impressions and acne scars doesn't play a role into it

I haven't really been very careful about my looks (facial), but I dress properly and everything. So I just want to know if I should start taking care of things specifically in this regard (looks, being in consulting). Also, I dont mean to sound materialistic and don't wish to hurt anyones sentiments for their looks or anything. Thanks!

Forget about consulting. Everyone in every industry/encounter account for looks in their first impression. (We are visual creatures). Taking good care of your body/yourself will only benefit you in the long term.

A little bit for women I think, but not so much for men? I am a woman, and average-looking. I just present well.

Also, I don’t mean to be offensive, but as someone of South Asian background, I notice that sometimes people don’t realize the effect that cooking in the home has on the smell of our body / clothes. I would just advise that you be cognizant of that when going out in public and freshen up / use cologne/perfume appropriately.

Agreed, dress appropriately and be showered and you’re good. People want to see you put in some effort for the day. Besides cosmetics, no one really cares - just take care of yourself for you. I found when I got in really good shape I started to perform better since my was performing more optimal and I was eating right. Also just had more confidence in myself

Similar question as OP but from a POV of height for men. I’m a 5’5 guy. To what extent does my height negatively impact me, from a perspective of leadership? Thanks!

like

We’re all the same size sitting down or in front of a camera. Like D1 wrote, looks are one thing, but it’s what you know and the way you say it that will have the greater impact.

Hi OP, while I don’t have views on your question, I wanted to let you know if you have tried something like an Azelaic acid for your acne. I’m also an Indian male and Azelaic acid was a savior for me.

My opinion is this - paying attention to the things you can control matters. The things you can’t control don’t. Exercise, eat right, keep a good skincare routine, dress smart, etc. and people will notice and respect it. Have acne, scares, balding, grey hair, too short, too tall? People might notice, but they won’t care. And if they do, screw em.

Agree with the points above. Hygiene, proper grooming, and dress is much more important than your natural build.

If the only thing you’re concerned about appearance wise is acne (assuming only bc it was the only “bad” thing you listed) that’s very much in your wheelhouse of control… I’ve found over the counter solutions for my own acne in the past but now have a dermatologist that I swear by. Prescription skincare is a game changer.

Yes, but not enough for you to need to change yourself. Be yourself, babyyyyy. 💛

I’m a data engineer/engineering manager by trade and massively screwed up by going into MBB consulting, I absolutely despise it and am looking to leave about 8 months in.
