Oh, you're in a tough spot but both I think are rewarding and you have to ultimately decide here are a few things to consider maybe. If you love research and value its creative freedom, the team lead position in research may be a better fit for you.As a team lead in research, you may have opportunities to lead projects, mentor others, and develop your leadership and management skills. On the other hand, the senior position in the industry may provide you with valuable industry experience, exposure to different projects, and an opportunity to expand your professional network.Academic positions can often involve long hours, including weekends and evenings, due to research demands and teaching responsibilities. Industry positions may offer more structured schedules and a better work-life balance, depending on the specific company and industry.A team lead position in research may enhance your analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills, which can be valuable in both academia and industry. Conversely, industry experience can provide you with a different perspective, project management skills, and an understanding of industry practices. Talk to some people in both and see what they have to say. I would also make a pros and cons list. A lot of times that helps me narrow down my decisions.
Thank you very much for this extensive answer. I agree in all points. I must add that I already did my share of research and I learned a lot. The research offer comes from my employer and actually the work environment deteriorated drastically in the last years. Choosing to stay and take over a leading position would be a bit like a fight against windmills. Still, it’s a tough one when you like the content of what you do.
I wouldn't worry so much about having too academic of a profile. People make the transfer all the time at various points in their career. Make the best decision for yourself in the present and trust that the future will work out how you need it to.
