Hi everyone- I recently accepted an offer to join MBB in June/July. I just found out I am pregnant ... I am worried about taking maternity leave shortly after joining.. anyone else have similar experience? Another concern is that I don’t have prior consulting experience (have a MBA) and worried about being able to perform as a consultant during/after pregnancy. My husband is thrilled but to be honest I’m not excited about this pregnancy :(

It's ok to take leave right after you join. You'll quickly realize that family is way more important than work.

I showed up to BCG four months pregnant with my first. No issues at all. I specifically chose consulting because I knew we wanted to have several children and the ability to step away between cases and completely forget about work isn’t something that’s easy to fine. It’s pretty great.

I also started in late pregnancy post MBA zero issue and tons of support, happy to chat if helpful

I am 38.5 weeks pregnant and survived strategy consulting during my pregnancy. The first trimester was awful given the nausea and exhaustion. I ended up hating my project, rolling off, and going on brief leave. Second and third trimesters have been decent as I’m ~80% of my normal self and have an amazing team to support me. That said, everyone’s pregnancy goes differently. I can’t tell you whether this pregnancy makes sense given your career, values, and marital dynamics, but wish you the best of luck! 🤞🏻

You will be ok. Hopefully the first twelve weeks you feel a bit crappy and find it hard to focus but after that you’ll do fine, the company will be totally cool, and you’ll have a great year and a healthy baby

Consulting is one of the easiest careers to take mat leave, since it’s project based, at least until you get to partner. You leave a project when you go on may leave and just start a new project when you come back. It’s not like having an industry job where people have to fill the gap of your role while your gone.

Absolutely normal and ok. I think if you relax you will be able to enjoy this pregnancy.

You’ll be okay . Take the offer , start, take the maternity leave , come back . Life as usual.. change your perspective . My friend in a similar situation at McKinsey is a freaking c suite exec at a pharma company now . Had two kids at McKinsey .. first one in her first year straight out of b school as an associate . Go for it.. the problem is only as big as as you make it in your head.

My hiring manager had double thoughts when I told him about my pregnancy. My offer was cancelled but next day he came back with offer and full support. I still don't know what went behind the scene but I am glad to be there and met the best manager to date. Absolutely adore him!!

Probably HR avoiding a lawsuit because rescinding an offer because he found out you were pregnant is hella illegal. In any case, I’m glad it worked out well in the end!

It is Ok, in consulting they will book you in engagements that will align with your schedule. I don't know where you are, but if you WFH you can hide the symptoms if you are comfortable telling your team. You feel bad during pregnancy, especially the first 3 months but it is on and off, so sometimes you'll be super productive during the morning others at night, and it is easier to manage while working from home.

Do you want children right now? Separate from concerns on how it might impact your career, are you in a place where you will feel good about going through pregnancy and all of the exhaustion and work of new motherhood?

Thank you everyone for your encouraging words, feel a lot more confident now about the journey ahead! Will take the offer and try to give it my best!

MBB offer it immediately, no negotiating necessary.

I went through the same worries as you as late as four weeks ago. I’m getting ready to officially start after much delay due to various issues resulting from COVID. When I start, I will be working for two months (maybe 2.5 months max) before taking maternity leave. The HR team and everyone in leadership whom I’ve spoken with have all been extremely supportive. You got this and congratulations!!!

Currently pregnant with second, started 3 months pregnant with my first. I have felt nothing but support (from all teams bar one person). So overall I must say it is doable if you want to so it, and people pass no judgement.

Any thoughts on the best certifications to get in order to help move forward? I have considered the CCP from World at Work, but it’s fairly pricey to get by the time you wrap up everything. I was looking at both SHRM-CP and SPHR. Everyone that I have spoken to has the SHRM, but that’s also only looking at individuals in a small geographic footprint and within 3-4 different companies. I was hoping to get some thoughts on this from others? Thanks
