Hi everyone! I recently became an L&E attorney representing employers. It was my goal to practice in this field, and I finally have the opportunity. What do you recommend for a new attorney to succeed in L&E? What do you wish you knew when you started? Books or blogs that you recommend to improve my knowledge? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you’ll be advising employers on top of litigation, know that it takes awhile to feel even moderately comfortable with doing so solo. Especially when unexpected, off-topic questions pop up over a phone call.

Find someone at the firm you feel comfortable bouncing advising questions off of, but, whenever possible, approach them with what you plan on advising and ask if they agree with that approach.

On a client call, it is totally fine (within reason) to buy yourself a little time “to look into something a bit further” if you aren’t sure of the answer. No one has all the answers and clients appreciate sound advice over instantaneous poor advice.

I agree with your advice. Thank you for sharing!

Hi! Has anyone boomeranged back into consulting? Especially MBB, either as an expert (healthcare) or generalist. My story: after UG, I started off at a pure strategy boutique. After 3.5 yrs, jumped to a Fortune 500 strategy role. Left after 2 yrs to join a small health tech startup that didn’t weather covid and am now freelancing. I’m hoping to continue consulting but find something with more “growth” and ppl Mgmt experience. I’m making what an EM would make with bonus & profit share (cont’d)

I’m an L&E associate entering my 5th year at a mid-sized regional law firm (approx. 400 attorneys). Barred in PA/NJ. Billed 2100 last year but my requirement is 1950. Should I try to lateral into BigLaw or should I try to go in house? Are either of those realistic options for me? I seem to be doing a significant amount of municipal law too, which is not what I expected or wanted at all. I want a life but would also hate to take a pay cut. Interested in L&E. Advice?

I’ve worked at the same big 3 boutique since I was a clerk. I’m a NEP now. I work in a mid to small market town. One of the partners in one of our larger offices wants me to move to their market. I have a great relationship with this partner and they are telling me they are planning to retire in 5 years. They have a sizable book of business. I have two small kids, my wife is an attorney who practices in state court. I’ll never be more than a well-regarded service partner if I stay. Would you go?
