Hello! I am new to this. 🖐
Hi everyone! Tamy here
2020 college grad with a degree in organizational dynamics, alongside that I have my Google project management cert (still in progress).
So lately I have been applying for roles: junior business analyst/ project assistant/ project management entry/ project coordinator and have been hit with all rejections. It sucks but i must press on.
Now my question is, how the hell do i break into the work space?

Hi Nancy — Job searches can be hectic. A couple pieces of advice:
1) Have a coherent narrative. Just looking at your LinkedIn, it looks like you have a lot of 1-2 year jobs in different fields. Obviously, as you explained here, you’re on a temporary contract at charter (definitely note that on your LinkedIn) and you switched to data analytics after having kids. I think that’s a great reason (and many people are sympathetic to the career challenges that come with having children). But it’s important to have a clear and concise narrative of your switch, the reason for it, and your overall career trajectory on your LinkedIn.
2) Consider upping your credentials. The certification is honestly great, but it can still be difficult to compete with someone who has a BA in that field or years of work experience in it. I know Google and MIT both have data analytics courses that would look great on a resume.
3) Tailor your resume. For instance, as a teacher, did you analyze student data to determine interventions? Tailor the descriptions of your past jobs to highlight experiences that might be relevant to what you’re applying for (you’d be surprised — more of it is probably relevant than you might think). Don’t be afraid to take verbiage directly from the job description and incorporate into your resume.
4) Network. If you have a referral from a company, it can be much easier to get an interview than blindly applying. Fishbowl is a great place to start. As is LinkedIn. Look for people who have similar experiences to you (same college/home town, former teachers or nutritionists, etc.) who are now in data analytics and reach out to them. Or just find kind people willing to put in a referral. Make sure if you’re asking for a coffee chat or referral that you have a clear objective in mind (have a specific job listing in mind you plan on applying for).
Hope this helps! And if you see any job postings at Deloitte that look interesting to you, happy to submit a referral! Best of luck!
Deloitte! Wow! Thank you for taking the time in viewing my linkedin profile and sharing your honest feedback! I’m definitely taking notes and applying your advice! :)
Yes really practical and great advice. Kudos!
Hi! I recently got an offer as a contractor for Charter communications, Data Analytics too.. can you share the experience? If you don’t mind to tell the reason of leaving ? Thanks!
I wish my contract wouldn’t of ended. Together with 4 other people, they hired us for a temporary project. I enjoyed my time working with them, as soon as I got the hang of things, it was pretty easy work. I didn’t get to utilize SQL, which I really want to put my skills to use. Congratulations on your job offer!
