Hi everyone! I wanted some advice around investment banking. I’m joining a boutique investment bank/VC fund in the next month as an intern. I’m a final year MBA student. I don’t have a background in finance and want to ensure that I can build professional Valuation models (3 statement, M&A...). What are some good materials/training resources to learn building these models on my own from absolute scratch...Many thanks for any helpful tips/advice!!

BIWS or wallstreet prep. If doing infra/project finance then I would recommend a specific Wall Street prep course for that as it’s very complex form of modelling I’ve done the general BIWS financial modeling course and the project finance/infra wallstreet prep course. Both have been outstanding and have allowed me to succeed

Check out Wall Street prep - it’s very well known and has great reviews

like

QQ - as someone who is considering MBA, why haven’t you learned how to build these models in class? Do they not offer these courses?

like

They definitely do, I had at least 4 courses where valuation modelling was required for people who wanted a finance designation.

Thank you all for the helpful feedback. Much appreciated! McK - yes, you are correct. They do offer these type of courses and I took a introductory level course to familiarize myself with the process. However, my guess is the industry expects a lot more rigor, speed when doing these on the job. As I am aiming to do a good job on my intern I want to prepare ahead of time. There is nothing over the summer that my school offers hence doing it on my own....

In summary, it sounds like Wallstreet prep may be a good resource to review. They have a premium package which covers the modeling basics and is self-paced. I’ll likely go with that. Thanks again!

Can somebody please explain to me why MBB and other top consulting firms are so adamant that you have an MBA? I majored in accounting, finance, and operations management at a top 10 undergrad business school and then got my masters in information systems from the grad school program. I took multiple MBA courses as electives when getting my masters and it seemed like those classes were very basic and easy. Idk if I would learn anything in an MBA program that I hadn’t already learned in undergrad
