Hi everyone,

I'm a frontend dev with 3 years of experience, recently moved to Canada. I've been job hunting for a month, but no luck yet. I've revamped my CV, LinkedIn, and got a Meta certification.

Any tips on breaking into the industry or connecting with recruiters? Your insights would be invaluable.

Thanks!

Tip: the backend.

Full disclosure: i recycle this comment every time a frontend dev does this.

Unsolicited narrative: I recently completed a full stack coding bootcamp and now started an AI/ML accelerated course 🤖 —- happy hunting & happy holidays!

Been in the industry for 24 years as a developer , this is what I have learned , companies prefer vertical skillsets when there is boom and prefer more horizontal skill when there is recession. Passion aside , you should never be labeled as front end or back end or middle ware specialist , aim to become full stack , that will get you through recession believe me , if you can handle angular/react/vue etc , backend should be a breeze for your to learn. Once markets start bouncing back then pick the area you really passionate about and find a better job !! Good luck!

Online portfolio/website would be my suggestion if you don’t have one yet

It’s all about number. The more recruiters you reach out to the better. Don’t apply on websites.

Learn how to market and sell yourself.

If you are new here, make sure you submit resume according to job description and you need to customize per application. You cannot use generic resume. Also, use keywords used in the job description in your resume.

What resources are you using to apply to roles? If you're not already, I'd recommend applying through multiple sites regularly. So LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.

Does your resume look unique and show your personality, both in its colors/design and bio? Including experience is great and necessary, but standing out in an ocean of resumes is also important. Giving people a glimpse of your personality helps you be memorable for whoever ends up reviewing it.

Do you have any friends, family, or friends of friends in the tech industry? Connections like that are a massive advantage, if you can get someone to recommend you somewhere or get introduced through someone, that'd be ideal

Check in citi

You could try marketing or UX roles.

Is your resume ATA compatible? Most resumes get auto rejected by the filters for formatting that ATS can’t read. Having 2 columns is a common mistake. Scannability is also super important - meaning can a recruiter understand your qualifications in less than 10 seconds? There’s lots of sites with helpful info on this stuff. Kantan hq is a good one.

Excited to check your CV and see if it's ATS friendly. Feel free to drop me a message for a resume check.

Below is my salary for the last 6 years. I didn’t come from a privileged background, & didn’t start making good money until recently in my 30s. I’m often envious of recent graduates that are making what I’m making (if not more)…but everyone has their own path & I’m grateful that every year has gotten better and better. I tell myself it will continue to do so.

Thoughts on the below role?

Got messaged about an analyst job doing the preliminary discovery stuff including dashboards. But not for the business, but to give recommendations to data scientists about where to focus. Having been a modeling DS, I can't imagine why I'd outsource exploratory analysis. Anyone seen a team like this before?

Also worried about career prospects. I've been wanting to turn business facing, but becoming the only DA on a DS team seems like it'd be a dead end with promos?
