Hi everyone, I’m a new grad currently gaining my first year experience doing ad ops at an agency. Was wondering if anyone would be willing to share any career paths they may have taken after a year or so working in ad ops. Not sure if ad ops will have opportunity’s for me to grow or if I should pivot to a different department in marketing. Thank you.

I'd recommend getting out of ad ops and transitioning to ad tech or martech. Ad ops doesn't have much long term growth, but it's a great starting point.

I’m happy to talk to you. I didn’t work in adops but did work with them a ton … my background is media (15+ yrs in ad agencies). Happy to help however I can. DM me.

I didn’t start in AdOps, but had a long stint in AdOps. Also did: Account Management, Sales Engineering, and now I do Product Management. Have seen other AdOps people move into technical producer / technical account management roles, business analyst / business intelligence roles, and even account executive roles. AdOps gives you knowledge on how the advertising ecosystem actually functions on a line item level and can be combined with other skills to be very helpful in a number of different roles in the advertising ecosystem!

I got my start in digital buying, mostly programmatic, and worked a ton with ad ops.

I’ve seen people transition into agency media buying/planning roles, or go vendor-side with adtech companies. I’ve also seen people take the analytics route, and some even went into product management. Almost all are making great money and have plenty of growth!

Media wasn’t for me, so made the switch to creative strategy. Once you’ve got some experience, just a matter of leveraging your network to get where you want!

I pivoted into a technical account manager & implementation lead. You can also look into a project manager or scrum master role if you have experience working with engineers

Hi there. I started my career in media in Ad Ops that lasted about 2 years, not thanks to the pandemic. I now work in Media Strategy and Planning on a global account, but unfortunately due to my lack of knowledge of anything else but ad ops, it was def a challenge applying for new departments, but if youre fine with entry or junior position so you can learn, you can potentially do anything. I was also lucky to have a manager that encouraged and helped me figure out what I wanted to do besides ad ops. Do research on departments, ask people in your own agency about what they do, dont be afraid to talk to recruiters! Best of luck on your future endeavors!

Thanks for the response!

First job out of college was ops then did project management then campaign management then technical account management then end up programmatic. You can pivot a lot and it depends if you like the data piece aka programmatic or high level media planning without activation.

I have offers from both United Health Group and Atlassian for a Senior Financial Analyst position. Similar Comp (Atlassian slightly higher due to stock options). Coming from another healthcare company as a SFA, does anyone have experience at either company? In the long term, does Atlassian look better on a resume/work experience due to the Tech/Software space? Seems like their culture is great, but a much higher work load due to the nature of the company. Thanks! Happy to answer DM's too
