Has anyone moved from a big 4 strategy and transactions role to MBB strategy? If anyone has advice on how to make the jump at a manager level - any advice would be appreciated.
Are there any skills or certifications that would matter as a manager, if we're applying to MBB?

Be honest about how this is an area of growth for you. But that your litigation background gives you a valuable perspective and ability to anticipate/best position your company if litigation should occur. You can talk about how you may approach the process “backwards” from a corporate associate, thinking about how there could be a dispute and then drafting accordingly. Litigators are best positioned to draft choice of law/venue/arbitration and even limitation on liability.
Thanks for the insight! I really appreciate it.
If it’s a litigation role they’ll know it’s not a main skill of yours. Be open about your experience and excited to learn more skills and increase your ability to contribute to the department.
If it’s a litigation position your main skills are going to be related to litigation: drafting pleadings, discovery. Taking deps, and spending a lot of time in court. As long as you’re an outstanding advocate & you can provide examples of your substantive legal writing & in-court wins, it’s ok to say “I’ve got this experience with contracts, I’m a tenacious litigator & a quick study, so I am looking forward to mastering the FCPA & being where you need me to be to review those contract provisions. You can expect me to get up to speed quickly since I’ve been litigating breach of contract disputes…” & then make the connection. Then read up on the FCPA-couple good articles or attorney listservs-& you’ll do just fine. Show them you’re confident you can master a skill you may not have @ 100% & it’s handled. Good luck. Bet you’ll do great!
No problem! You learn as you go & sharing our experiences demystifies. The practice of law is a calling & if we can give each other a hand up, it allows us to practice that calling to the benefit of our clients & ourselves. I think we owe this to each generation as we gain these experiences. I had an amazing father who was a great man, attorney, & friend. He instilled this in me as an integral part of what it means to “practice” law, rather than just having a career. So you’ll pay it forward. Let us know how it goes.
