EY is 19 weeks (maternity and paternity) including 3 weeks of automatic vacation at the end (we have unlimited vacation policy). Mothers can also take an additional 2 weeks prior to the due date.
Absolutely - nothing is not where any company should be. It’s great you’re taking that first step.
I just posted the same question in the Consulting bowl! Looking for US benchmark data to try and improve our firm’s leave policy. Appreciate the answers here!
Would you mind sharing any info you have gathered? You can DM me :)
Are you only looking for US benchmarks? Because the US is a real outlier on this front. For example, 6 months paid maternity leave is not unusual here in the UK
You might not be a global company but your employees could seek employment from one. I’m US based and intentionally sought out a non-US employer because of their tendency to be more gracious in that space. Many friends have done the same.
I get 20 weeks paid at 100% plus 100% employee paid health plans for family coverage . They even fund the deductible via spending account contributions.
As a Canadian who is currently on mat leave, it breaks my heart to read this thread. We get 26 weeks at 100% and than the government pays something for the rest of the year. I can’t imagine having to leave my little guy after 5 or 6 weeks. Power to you US moms. Hopefully the system changes…
What is your point in posting this? The system will not change without universal healthcare and childcare.
We now have a leave paid by the government in the state of MA. I worked in several European countries, and I took my maternity leave in Russia, and their maternity leave is up to 3 years. The problem with any government-sponsored maternity leave is that it never comes close to your paycheck if you’re in a high-paid role. And as far as I know in Canadá employers don’t have to pay for maternity leave, so your company’s policy is kudos to your company and not to the system.
My employer had similar policy when I was in Russia, and I got 6 months fully paid, however, I had to get back to work right after as state benefits simply didn’t cover my expenses.
My point? Empathy with my fellow moms ❤️💜
The Canadian system deserves a bit of kudos too - private company mat leave is enabled by government policy. It’s the norm to take 12-18 months leave here! It’s an important part of our Canadian values and in turn workplace values and culture. My family is lucky enough to be in a stable financial position that taking 26 weeks at minimal pay wasn’t a big deal. In the grand scheme of life I would rather have that time unpaid with my little guy - than the equivalent salary (I’m a Partner btw). But that is both my personal choice and privilege, circumstances differ.
Time to move to Canada! 🙂
The issue with US is the entire country doesn’t have the same values. Same issue with Covid. We can’t agree on anything unless it stays state specific. There are 6 states that offer paid family leave. I do not live in one of them. My company also does not have paid leave. I make the same as my husband and when I go on Mat leave it will be a huge hit for us. I’m sure I’m not the only family who deals with this.
12 weeks paid for maternity or 6 weeks paid for paternity which is totally new. You have to be with the company for at least a year. Ad agency with company size of 500-1000
I had to do a similar analysis 3 yrs ago when I worked for a start-up. Based on my research a good number of companies offered 5 weeks full pay through short-term disability for natural birth and 8 for c-section. You could take up to 3 months but had to use vacation, take unpaid or in some cases you could receive 1/3 or 1/2 pay for anything over the 5 or 8. Industry ranged from b2b, tech to research agency and company size ranged from 500-2000
This policy is what used to be like years ago, before companies realized they had to do better. I would say the norm now for medium size-large size is at least 12 weeks paid. And many added paternity leave or care for elderly family members. Some even have menopause leave now. So the times have changed. Make sure you’re looking at an updated research.
What state are you in and what industry?
Yes, it's crowdsourced by MA Talent Group. You won't find nationwide practices, though. It heavily depends on HQ state
I would be happy to discuss this with you this is what my organization focuses on in supporting employers.
