SQL, power bi, tableau, Dax, becomes an expert with all of these. Keep you data analyst skills. Trust me later in your career you will be able to dev your own data sets. You become a one person show. When you need your developers for bigger projects they will be more inclined to help because you’ll be able to translate what you need on the back end and front end. Being able to do this has made me jump leaps and bounds from my peers and add a lot to my organizations bottom line. Later you can add python as R for more data science questions.
Great advice, thank youuuu!!!
It will definitely help going into this as a data analyst. Tableau, Domo, and R (specially the ggplot2 package) will help. Also D3 if you want to go into something more advanced. But obviously all this will depend on the client, agency, licenses etc. But Tableau has a free student version and R is free so start off there? What you’ll quickly realize is that while you can get great visualizations through D3, it’s going to take much longer than if you were to use Tableau for example. So most of your work will have to take time constraints into account. I produce visualizations that I’m not super proud of but when you get a random request in the morning that’s due EOD and you already have preplanned work you can’t be too picky 🤷🏽♀️
I am in that area now. I think it will be handy for you to go in as a data analyst. You need to know your data before you can visualise it. Sure it helps to brush up on some statistical concepts but only if you know your data, can you know what type of insights your company could find useful.. which then translates into visualisations. What tool are you using for visualisations ?
If you’re going to learn to code. Learn python not R... it’s becoming the de facto standard for scientific computing and data science these days.
Plot.ly, seaborn and JavaScript package. Also learn UX and information design
Thank you everyone! I’m learning on Lynda about Tableau and python. Thinking on signing up for a data bootcamp and take classes, if anyone knows or has taken classes somewhere please let me know.
My company unfortunately is not really involved with any of these programs. We currently don’t use them and I have no one to teach me or help me with questions I have about the softwares. So I’m thinking having a teacher and taking classes besides learning online would really help me learn to use these softwares.
Right now we don’t use any tool besides power point and excel from exporting the data from our platform. But I’m learning on my side Tableau and Power Bi, I want to improve the way our reports look cause the person in charge of the templates right now has no idea of these other softwares that can improve the way our reports look. I want to step up and bring this into my team as also I want a new job title to differentiate from the rest of my team and work into improving our templates. Any other software I should learn and use for this?
