Look into Lincoln Park, Old Town, River North and Streeterville. All very walkable. Lincoln Park has a lot of tree lined streets and really nice places that make it a bit nicer. Old town has older charm. And river north and streeterville have downtown hustle and bustle energy. Not that those other two neighborhoods are sleepy by any means
Completely agree with this post. Loop and South Loop have no personality and aren't crazy accessible. I think West Loop is fun but Old Town and Lincoln Park have a wonderful culture, are close to the lake, and close to downtown.
Very big differences between those three Loops. West Loop is the best loop to move to esp if you’re new to the city - I’m sure this is probs going to offend the handful of die hard Loop or South Loop people in this bowl, but the general consensus is that an overwhelming amount of Chicagoans would pick WL. Separately, I would encourage you to consider Lincoln Park. These posts happen once every couple months and Lincoln Park and West Loop typically always ride to the top for best places to start your Chi journey. Good luck
West Town/wicker park area is also great. Easy and quick to get downtown if you stay near the blue line. Excellent restaurants and a more diverse pool of people.
Loop, South Loop, West Loop are all different neighborhoods. In case you were wondering, River North and Lakeshore East round out the cardinal directions for being near the loop.
I'd pick river north for your first Chicago experience. Excellent transit access. Walking distance not just to downtown jobs, but to one of the densest areas for bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and shopping in the country. You can have a Michelin starred restaurant, rooftop (or riverfront) bar and Trader Joe's within a few blocks of each other. Maybe your job too. I wouldn't worry about crime that much, as the news blows things out of proportion.
After a year near some of the most interesting stuff Chicago has to offer, you can assess where you like to hang out, you'll know more about the neighborhoods, you can assess the commute, and can move if you want.
Tell us more about what you're looking for, and your baseline. If you're living in Manhattan today, then the density and walkable stuff isn't new to you, and maybe you want a more trees and low density feel like Lincoln Park. But if you're living in Cincinnati, then maybe you would want a unique high-density experience you haven't seen before.
I'll add some spicier thoughts. Part of the reason the Old Town, Lincoln Park through Wrigleyville corridor is so popular is because a good chunk of people feel better in a whiter neighborhood. Yes, there are crime rate differences, but that doesn't gloss over the racial angle. With that in mind, the South Loop is underrated because some people don't want to live closer to the "south side of Chicago".
There's a Trader Joe's right in the middle of the south loop. Tons of apartments and transit nearby, and a bigger Jewel grocery store across the street for more national brands. Pull up 1200 S Wabash on Google maps to see the area. Some apartments have great views of the lake and park.
I personally don’t like the loop at all, but there’s something for everyone here. What are things you care about in a neighborhood, what’s your budget, and do you have an office or a location you need to be near?
Agreed! Ideally max 3k, won’t have a car and I’m fully remote. Safe/easy access to grocery, walkable distance to restaurants, etc. Wanted to be near downtown to be closer to friends:)
I am trying to relet my Jr. One Bed right on Wells in Old Town if you’re interested. Lease runs through August 9th with option to renew. It’s a bit cheaper ($1987) than other units in the area in luxury buildings (has doorman, pool, gym). Great neighborhood, close to transit to get downtown. Fun bars and restaurants right outside the door.
I would recommend Lincoln Park, Old Town, River North over South Loop.
Appreciate the offer/suggestions! I will def keep that in mind:)

Thanks so much! I will take a look.
How old are you? What’s your budget? What kind of things do you like to do/what’s your general vibe?
I haven’t seen those questions asked/answered, but they are relevant. Sorry if I missed any answers!
