Remember that when people tell you to build relationships, that doesn’t mean be friends with your kids. The relationship should be child/trusted adult.
Build positive relationships with support staff—paras, office staff, custodians, cafeteria staff, etc. You never know when it will pay off, but it will!!
Develop a HEALTHY work/life balance. Don't work harder than your students.
Patience and be able to change direction or think quickly on her feet when the original plan fails. It will, it’s just a part of. Remember it is not a bad thing, but a learning experience, growing experience and relationship experience. All kids will behave and react differently year to year. Don’t get comfy and complacent, stay on your toes and do the best you can. Make connections with the staff at all levels so she has her group to talk to about the good and the bad.
Be open to new ideas and flexible in your approach to teaching.
She doesn't have to reinvent the wheel. There are tons of free things online that she can use and tweak to what she needs.
Learn to pronounce the students names properly. Some might be more difficult than others but let them know you'll keep trying until you get it right.
Say no to extra stuff in the building, unless you actually want to do it. They always come for the new teachers.
Yes. Move around in your classroom.
Let her know that she will make some mistakes but that is part of the learning process but don’t give up.
Get to know security, custodians, secretaries.
Take the time to talk to them, see how their day is going.
If something is going on (some event) be sure to let them know ahead of time. Acknowledge and thank them when your plans/activities mean they go out of their way for you.
These are people who need and deserve your respect and support. And their friendship and support can make a world of difference on the rough days.
Classroom management is most important before teaching/learning can occur!! You can be strict without being mean.
