Does he want to be a developer and learn coding . Or a data analyst , Or a QA tester , or probably a Product manager , Business analyst or Project manager. Ask him to look up videos of these roles , he can start out with IT support and then earn some money to pay for the other certifications and hands on learning . He will do great , just needs guidance when going into IT,
I agree he needs guidance - he just kinda jumped into this - well I mostly encouraged it. And now I worry he doesn’t know the next steps.
In IT support, you can have people supporting certain applications when where you help out with
- backups,
- fixes to the code or to bring an application up after it went down/behaved in an unexpected manner (which needs you to understand those applications - usually learned on the job)
- change requests
And there can be Business Analysts, developers, testers, DevOps teams, depending on how teams are structured.
What I just shared here does not include cyber security operations centre roles.
The certification sounds generic . It Support ??? I want to believe he will be doing more of IT related troubleshooting activities, like SNOW , Installation assistance and the likes. It sounds like he is young so there is a lot of opportunities out there to be much more streamlined .
Thank you for this. What is a good concentration for him? For background, He has a HS diploma and some college AS Communication. This is his first IT education experience.
I think that's a great start, they can probably start with an entry level support job. But more certifications like networking, cybersecurity etc to level up
Can he successfully get a entry level with absolutely no experience?
Does your brother have any interest in a particular field of tech?
I have to sit down and speak with him about this. I don’t think he knows
So the general census is that the Google cert is not enough? He needs something a bit more concentrated?
Yes there is room to grow depending on your brother's interests beyond the Google IT Support training and certification your brother completed. It was a good first step!
