Hi Excel Geniuses - I am working on an excel project plan and need to classify line items as “workstream” “milestone” “key activity” and “activity” based on their indentation. Can the IF function be used for this?

Use the LEN() function to get the length of those cells. If it’s consistent across all cells (0 for work stream, 2 for milestone etc). Then you can use an IF(LEN(A1)=0, “Workstream”, IF(LEN(A1)=2, “Milestone”)) etc

As an example these line items look like: Workstream 1 Name Milestone 1 Name Key Activity 1 Name Activity 1 Name

What about using color instead?

So not sure I understand, but it sounds like you want to extract that first part of the cell into a separate cell that you can then use to filter/pivot on? Is that right? If so, and if your categories are not going to change, the simplest way I can see is to use the first letter of each since they all start with different letters. E.g., if(left(A1,1) = "W", "Workstream", if(left(A1,1) = "M", "Milestone", if( ... You get the gist. Hope this helps.

Start by adding an index column that will preserve the current ordering. Then sort by your column, which should group all the workstreams, milestone, key activity, and activities together. Add the label in the appropriate column. Sort back by index column and they should all be labeled correctly and back to the right order.

Whoever laughed at the above - I agree! 🙂

It’s fairly easy to write a UDF in VBA that can extract the indentation level. You could use an if function combined with the UDF to tag a row based on the indent level.

I feel like many in big law have an unhealthy penchant for victimizing themselves. I’m talking about people who never say “no” to new matters, keep working late nights and talking about sleep deprived they are, are always vocally miserable but never quite miserable enough to do something about it. Many of them get promoted and this culture of victim-flexing continues in perpetuity. Does big law attract these types or do we (yes, sadly I’m like that too sometimes) become like this over time?

I am extremely conflicted.
