Hi Fishbowl Community,

I am making a career switch from Marketing/Account Management into Consulting. Would appreciate if someone can share their path into this field and how they went about finding a case study partner to practice with? Any great books/ or recommended online programs/certifications would be helpful too!

Thanks 😊

Hi I made an industry move (Higher Ed) as well not from same field. One thing that would/might be helpful is to know how your org positions and approaches engagements.

Some orgs have their own style, others attempt to copy MBB firms and drill the Pyramid Principle down your throat.

I would recommend a few books on general consulting that are helpful.

Convinced by Jack Nasher is about how to prove your competence which is key as a consultant.

McKinsey Mind or Pyramid Principle by Barbara Minto can be helpful. But you can also watch a quality YouTube video and get the essence

The number one skill that I lacked is PowerPoint for a consultant. I would 100% spend time getting your technical skill set up because it will save you so much time.

Also be prepared to work, a lot.

What is the most amount of times you have Applied to one specific company? It could be different job titles and different states but how many times have you applied to the same company? Sodexo , levy, compass group, Hyatt Hilton Marriott have Applied to all those 30 or 40 times over the past three years. Talk about insanity. I stopped applying six months ago I’m no longer wasting my time with people like this!

I have over 12 years in B2B sales/sales management experience along with a graduate degree. I am wanting to shift gears and I am at a point where I can invest time in myself to learn through practical experience. The new industry I am wanting to pursue is real estate investment. I have read all the books but want some hands on experience on the property management side. How could I best leverage my skills for a role in this, and what should my expectations be for negotiation in compensation?

I'm currently working for a startup that has been unable to pay us for 2ish months while they are trying to secure investor funding. They said they will back pay us and (we're working much fewer hours) and they were reaching into their personal savings for months before and never took a salary. We have patients enrolled so we agreed to help for a few weeks but not for this long. I don't want to burn bridges and I am currently interviewing elsewhere but any recommendations??

I was recently hired as a Consultant but found out (from both peers and people at managers grade) that I am getting paid less than average for my grade.

In my last performance review my PDL stated that I was identified as a top performer and that the firm will be want to invest in my development as they think I can provide great value on long term. I also had great feedback from my manager, director, and client.

How do I start the conversation to ask for a raise? How can I build a solid case?
