Hi Fishes! All help appreciated I received an offer from my dream co. - McKinsey. Have another discussion with HR for comp. & joining details, once I accept the offer. I want to join after 4 months (2m of notice period at Deloitte & 2m I want for personal self). How do I take that up? How much deferral of joining is normal? Suggest some reasons (something that sounds genuine | Honestly want to sit home for 2 months and relax, but not sure if HR will accept it) Share experiences if anyone?

McK offers are usually open offers and you can join anytime within the next 12 months. You don’t need to provide any reason to HR regarding the joining the date. Good luck

4 months?! Idk if that is plausible. why do you need 2 mos of notice for Deloitte? At most I've seen 1 mo and then start at new firm right away I think maybe you tell McKinsey you want to start in 1.5mos give Deloitte 2 weeks notice after you sign and background check clears, then you relax for 1 month.

Just ask. They will not rescind your offer simply for asking. They will tell you if that is feasible or not.

Congrats OP

I was given option of two joining dates, July and September ( offer was made in June). I took the September joining date. Don't see 4 months timeline being an issue for you... Congrats and enjoy your time off

2 months notice at Deloitte is standard for the US-India practice, are you in India?

Are you in US?

OP is in India, that’s why 2 months.

Thanks all for inputs. Yes, I am in India, thats why 2 months notice at Deloitte. Based on all responses, I think, I can atleast explore the option and see how it goes.

What would be better I explore this right now only? Or After 2 months of notice period bring this up that I want another 2m?

Explore now. They can just say no.

A question for Big 4 peeps - if you know the salary range in the group you wanna go for is 150k to 170k, how much should you say when the HR asks you how much you want? Is 180k too much to start with? (Didn’t want to start with 170k since they will only come back with lower I assume)

I accepted an offer from another firm and gave notice to my direct partner on Friday. He asked me to wait a few days as a courtesy before giving notice to the firm’s managing partner. The partner I work for knows several of the attorneys at the firm where I got the offer. He is now coming back to me and saying my current firm will match the salary, offer better hours, better title, etc. Needless to say, I’m torn. How bad is it to walk back on an accepted offer? We are in a smaller legal market.
