I am noticing that McKinsey is increasingly recruiting at non-elite schools (very roughly speaking not top 15 schools). At my old undergrad, 5 years ago the most competitive firm to show up was EY. This year McKinsey took 4 non-internship full hires. Why is McKinsey going “down market” for recruiting? Are elite school kids losing interest in consulting so McK has to cast a wider net? Or is McK seeking a wider pool for other reasons? I advise undergrads on consulting so want to be best informed.

I’ve recently graduated with a chemical engineering degree from Texas A&M university. I was unable to get an internship during my time as a student, but I’ve held jobs (mainly customer-service based) throughout college. Does anyone have any advice on how to perform better in interviews? Also, what industries would allow for an entry level position with little experience?

Gratitude post! This time last year I was in a job that didn't value me at all and didn't support me as an individual. Decided to go out on a limb and apply for an MBA internship (doing my MBA part time). Saved up enough money and quit for the internship. Internship went extremely well and secured a full time role. There were so many obstacles to each step and I had to really humble myself but it was so worth it. Now I'm in a great place and 2x'ed my salary within a year. So blessed!

I interviewed for a 3L Externship at a big law firm in Michigan. The interview went really well & I am confident that I may secure the position. During the interview, they said that this position differs from their summer internship in that they do not intend to offer employment positions after the externship. As I graduate in May, that’s what I was hoping for. However, I know when I get there I’ll work extremely hard regardless. Any suggestions on approaching an offer of employment anyways?

I just realized that my base salary is only 8k more than the new hire I am training. My base is 56k, his 48k. I’ve been with this firm for 2.5 years, had two years experience as an intern coming in, and am licensed. The new hire is 5ish years younger with only his bachelors, no experience. Is this normal?? I know our firm is trying to get more help but they don’t seem to care about keeping good workers. I do end up making 70k w/ overtime but still!

I’m an MBA student currently applying for summer internships. I agreed to be my boyfriend’s +1 at a wedding this summer in DC, but due to the challenges of the job market + my own career interests I’m applying for internships across the country & internationally. My boyfriend is upset that if I don’t intern on the East Coast I can’t make this wedding, but I think it’s ridiculous to make an important career decision based on a wedding of people I don’t even know. Am I in the wrong here?
