If a recruiter asks about whether I’m interviewing elsewhere and talking to other recruiters, how to respond?

My resume has been getting pickup by recruiters because of my Accenture brand and the ironical phone screening usually is along the lines of “perfect, I’m going to send this to our hiring manager. I’m sure we will be going on to scheduling interviews after your resume is reviewed by the manager.” Fast forward two days and I receive an automated response “thank you for applying to XYZ we have decided to move on” why am I not even getting an interview? After clerking, my BF recently accepted an offer from and joined a V50 firm (been there a few weeks). Shortly before his start date, he heard back from a V5 firm (one he’s wanted to join for a while) and just got an even better offer. Practice groups at each firm are also different.

The office he joined for the V50 firm is in City A. The office for the V5 firm is in City B (where V50 firm also has an office).

How should he break the news to the V50 firm to minimize reputational risk, etc.?
