At Mckinsey if you’re recruited into a practice, it’s just the same as being recruited to an office (you’re in fact also hired into an office), except with one additional thing: once you’re in, the majority of your engagements will be focused on the practice you’re associated with. Typically people who are recruited into practices have relevant training or industry experience, eg MDs hired into the healthcare practice, engineers into the manufacturing practice etc. There are no differences in comp or progression between generalists and people affiliated with practices. Generalists tend to specialize with time at the Firm.
Most hired out of undergrad, MBA, Law, and lateral hires fro consulting companies are hired as generalists.
M4, That’s a good point. Definitely depends on the availability of engagements and other factors, and there is flexibility to explore as well. I’m also practice aligned and have done engagements all over the place, but proportionally I’ve done more from my practice.
Don't know if there is such thing in BCG. You might be in expert track hench in a specific PA but you are always recruited for an office.
