What about benefits, bonus, etc. 200k in bay won't be like 200k in Chicago. Also there is no Italian beef sandwich in the bay area.....👀

Good time to get a rent deal in the bay. Go google better exit ops.
Yeah I am relocating now and Bay Area rent is now same as Boston (if not cheaper)
Google will have massive growth opportunity, amazing culture and benefits and set you up for life. 40k is small in the scheme of things. Google name will mean a lot in the course of your career.
M1 - I want to believe you! But not sure if it applies to non tech folks. Do you know of people who have made it big post Google? Genuinely asking

Assuming you’re going to take one of these and are okay with COL differences...
1. Do you know what you want to do down the line? If it’s retail or CPG (or e-commerce of course) then Walmart. If FAANG then obviously Google. If unsure then I would do Google for the reasons others listed. Of course both of these names are great but think about the connections you’ll be naturally making in each job.
2. How are the teams you’ll be working with? Hiring managers? Who do you feel more of a natural connection with? You said both teams are smart but do you feel a better connection with one?
3. How important are upward trajectory and promotions to you? Those are slower in industry. If you’re close to the next level at ATK you def might want to stay

I had an ex-classmate who went to Walmart e-commerce strategy. She quit just over a year later because the culture and the WLB was so bad. Apparently there was a lot of micro-managing going on, and the performance management wasn’t very fair. I don’t know if this was team specific, but you might want to try to sus this out.
Interesting! I had a similar hunch but good to know! Would you be able to connect me with your friend by any chance?
S&O is basically internal consulting for Google. Do you have a perspective on what sorts of projects you’d be doing or what the process is to move into a BU role? Otherwise, it’s more of the same sort of work but with different surroundings.
My sense is folks who don’t find a permanent fit still go to business school or rotate out to another tech org after the first promotion or so.
Possible to negotiate with Google using Walmart offer?
I don’t think so

Congrats, assuming youre a second year Associate with that comp? I feel you on the WLB and being burnt out, but if you’re very close to Manager and will make even more ($250-275, total guess?)…that’s a pretty massive gap in your take home being in Chicago vs $200k being in SF.
Yes this exactly! But why do management consultants get excited about Google?
Bay COL is way higher than Chi. What type of lifestyle are you looking for? Is this temporary or do you need to plan for a family...
Dual Income No Kids
Looking at only the comp is a large portion of your decision, things to consider when working in industry vs consulting is that you will typically be in one location (city/office) and have greater opportunity to network in the Bay Area. Also working in industry, you should be able to see the result of your work. Have had many former Kearney co-workers move to Google and they have all done well there.
You already are in a great situation (DINK, earning >$200K, consulting experience, etc.) think the question for you is not necessarily if you're going to be able to afford the Maserati vs the Lexus, but where you want to take your career.
How long was the process?

Do you have to move? SF is way more expensive as you know...I don’t think the salaries are comparable to what you have now when you considered COL

OP are you ore or post MBA ? Of you are post MBA ( plus experience) , the google offer is a level down and will would maybe go with Walmart or try others , if pre - it’s a great offer and you will rise in comp much faster
Hi Mck2,
I do not have an MBA but have masters degree.
Do you still think the offer was fair? How long does it take to move from L4 to L5? And what will the bump be like?
Don’t leave us!
If it’s WLB you are optimizing for, choose google and don’t look back
