Tell them ASAP before you get scheduled on projects. If you haven't started yet, maybe they can switch you by the time you start or hopefully within a few weeks or months. Unfortunately it's not a quick process, as there is a lot of underlying HR and accounting stuff that needs to be changed, but I have never seen a firm reject a request from someone at the staff level, especially an oncoming staff.
I had a friend transfer from tax to audit within one year of joining. Very possible, just let them know ASAP and keep reminding them and asking to set a date. Reach out to both your partner/RL/HR
I had the same thoughts as you as an incoming tax intern. About 2 months before my internship I reached out to my recruiter to tell her I wanted to switch to audit. A week and a couple phone calls later I received a new offer for assurance.
If you’re sure you want to switch, I would reach out as soon as possible. Assurance can always use more people so I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem
