Bench is when you are not currently staffed on a client. You are “on the bench waiting to be called in”. Some firms also use the term “the beach” interchangeably, but I see the “beach” as when you’re unstaffed, but know you have something lined up in two weeks, aka not as stressful as the bench and you can relax a bit more

If you’re new, would strongly recommend going into the office while on the bench. It’s so important to establish relationships and she your availability! Once you’re established, and have a better sense of what’s acceptable or not, do whatever you want

On the performance question: attitude will be everything in your first few projects. You will probably suck at the consulting basics, as most of us did, but no one will remember that so long as you’re positive, warm, coachable, and eager to learn and contribute. Ask how you can help, even if it’s just ordering lunch. Be early and stay late. These will earn you an extremely favorable reputation AND help you learn quickly, so once you figure out how to do the job, you’ll accelerate like crazy and everyone will support you. Source: this was me - godawful at the fundamentals of consulting for my first 6 months but top reviews ever since once I established how hungry I was to learn and be a team player.

And I’ll add that now that I’m a manager staffing my teams, these are the profiles I look for. 99% of the time I would rather have a positive, hard working person who needs (and wants) help in XYZ area than a phenomenal XYZ who behaves entitled and self-interested in a team setting.

Long Post : I have a divorced female friend that I have known for over 15 years and consider as a sister. For the past couple weeks because I was on the bench and bored we talked about an hour+ often, especially when I am walking and need company. My wife went through my T mobile call history and mad because I'm talking to her too often and too long. She knows the friend as well and we all hangout on multiple occasions. Am I doing something wrong here? Or my wife is just insecure?

I am in a state where wages are lower than the big cities but I still think this is too low given partners make 250k-500k/year. Thanks.
