Hi guys. I have 2 tax senior offers one from EY and one from a top 20 midsize firm but they’re in 2 diff lines of tax. The EY one is for 1120/ASC740 work and the midsize is for HNWI/trust/estate PCS work. I’ve never done Corp compliance before but I do have 1040/1120S/1065 experience. Do you guys have any advice? What to expect, what kind of exit opportunities there are, etc ? I know the midsize has better WLB as well

Why not just try the Big4 gig? If you don't like it it'll be easier to go down than if you did not like the other firm and want to try B4

like

Turnover at big 4 is high. But they still can be selective. And more likely to get promoted faster coming from big to small than other way. Depends what you real want tho

The midsize firm will be good if you want to be a partner someday. Once you step into HNW, you will lose the opportunities to work in industry. It is still hard to get good industry roles (with equity or nice stock options), but 740 experience at EY will get you there. Anyway, congratulations!

like

I don’t feel partner is out of the question. I have pretty good people skills, which is an overlooked attribute in public Acct that’s needed to be in a high level role like partner

I think it depends on what you want to do long term and what the industry opportunities are like in the city you eventually want to be at. for the ASC740 one, do you know what kinds of work you will be doing? In some offices, a lot of the work is channel 1 audit l, which I don’t think provides the best experience for transitioning to industry. Definitely better to get on channel 2 prep, but that is a little harder to get on depending on the office. Depending on the office, might not be too many 1120 opportunities. In my office, I know some GCR seniors who only have one compliance engagement, while others are dying because they have 2-5 compliance engagements (not all 12-31 YE). I think you should learn about the office’s WLB and culture before making a decision. In some offices the 40 hour work weeks are few and far between since the beginning of covid. Probably more reasonable to work 50-60 hours most of the year, with 40/70/80 hour weeks scattered throughout the year

What are your salary offers?

Both salaries are around the same. No huge variance that would sway my decision one way or the other

What do you want to do long term?

Feel like it’s easier to start big and go down than the other way.

like

I would take the big 4 100%. You want the c corp experience. That will lead you to more opportunities.

PCS experience can translate to single/multi family office, financial planning, or privately held companies. Depending on team/firm culture and office, there's also no reason you can't be in pcs and still keep your hand in corporate or pass through engagements. I think the best move is whichever one gets you the most opportunities for a well rounded experience. C-corp/Provision work also seems incredibly narrowing to me.

Yes, the family office seems like the only exit from PCS in PA. Why does c Corp/provision work seem narrowing to you ? Isn’t that what most tax depts are looking for in large companies ?

- Working on DataCamp to learn SQL and Tableau; enjoy the challenge.
- Just started exploring SF Trailhead, specifically an SF Admin trail.
- I’m trying to break into a remote position in tech, but I am unsure what route to take.
