Same thing happened to me - was offered just under 100k for an in house role at a bank. 4th year coming from NYC biglaw. Bank was in a midwest city, not in NYC, still shocked. Is this what we can expect at in house roles? Hope not because my biglaw patience is wearing thin
Thank you A6! 😢 I really appreciate the support and encouragement. I cried today. Am so sad. The hoops require a significant emotional investment so naturally am crushed. But I will keep moving forward in faith
Was this an associate counsel role or a contract manager position? I’ve heard that there is a significant difference in pay between different types of in house legal roles at Amazon—less than $100k wouldn’t be unheard of for some of them. Amazon is also notorious for being stingy about base comp and then putting all the $$ in stock incentives that take forever to vest, FWIW.
I figured that was the case, but you never know!
Asked me whether am a home owner or renter. Which I consider an inappropriate question because I don’t understand why that information is relevant to the job. Does anyone have experience with them? Were you able to negotiate a higher salary or should I just keep looking? Their salary is essentially half of what I make in big law! Not justifiable! The recruiter also mentioned that my salary requirement could be a barrier in getting the job and I indicated I was fine with that.
If I were you I’d stay far far away from Amazon. I’ve had multiple recruiters try to recruit me for Amazon jobs and the salary is always half of what I’m making in BigLaw. In addition, the last time the recruiter said I’d have to commit to working 1800-2000 hours a year. When I laughed and said that’s exactly like working in BigLaw she back tracked saying oh it’s not all late nights and weekends it’s a way better work life balance. We all know what it looks like working those hours so why would you take a 50% pay cut to basically work the same amount we do now? In addition to all that, I’ve heard way too many rumors about their mentality as a sweat shop. Just my two cents!
Seattle market for lawyers has not caught up to housing prices FWIW.
This is so helpful to know....wow!
FWIW, Seattle BigLaw is below cravath comp, and by a significant margin at most firms after COVID related pay cuts
Oh I wasn’t suggesting you should take the offer, I’m just saying that part of how Amazon gets away with it is because the comp is lower in Seattle than in other similarly sized markets
I’ve also heard it’s like working in a puppy mill there. Hard to work on what you want to and they don’t care much about employees. Better to go elsewhere
Is the job out of state? Did you ask the recruiter the relevance of the home ownership question?
Maybe they will help you sell your house by giving you a relocation expense budget and/or hooking you up with a real estate agent. It’s probably related to some non cash salary perk.

I have no advice unfortunately but I’m surprised to hear this! Was it a Counsel role?
