Hi guys! It's my first post in here but just couldn't take that longer!

I finished engineering at uni (last year) and now work in engineering consulting, a lot of systems planning, feasibility studies, safety some high-lvl design. The thing is... It all feels like a pile of bs to me! Business playground where we chat obvious stuff that could be done by the first guy you ask from the campus. Is it just me? Any comments thoughts on that?

I’ve been an M2 since I started at Meta 5 years ago. 6 of my last 11 performance reviews were Exceeds Expectations. 2 Meets Mosts early on in career but then the rest were Meets All. Been asking what my gap has been to get to D1. People that worked for me (started same day) are now D1. Peers have been promoted past me to D1 (Director). Been told my gap is influencing up and out. But … if this is my ONlY gap isn’t that ok? We’re not meant to be perfect right? What am I missing? Go to HR?

Fresh Junior lateral and a colleague from past firm (different practice area) asked if I could take a pro Bono case because he trusts me with it. It would be completely creditable under my firm’s policy, but would it look weird to ask for pro Bono credit in my first few weeks post lateral?

Just worried it would look like I’m not prioritizing work that actually earns the firm money. Idk maybe I’m overthinking it. Thoughts? TIA!

I am curious as to how people respond to the “what are your career goals and interests”. I’m not sure how to articulate what those are and would love advise. The one thing I know is that I want to steer away from project management/admin stuff and do more technical/hands on work. I have a background in environmental science and do QC checks and database management (I find it uninteresting). I feel like I am stagnant in my skills and not learning anymore, and want more science heavy stuff.

Is there really a job where you can work 8-9 hours a day and not think/stress about a million things related to work beyond that? In my current case, I’m only working 10 hours a day effectively, but there is still this constant pressure (not sure if it’s self-induced) to upskill myself, go above and beyond, etc. I don’t think consulting will ever get me to a place where I can let go beyond my normal work hours

Do I negotiate my salary and benefits package? I was offered a 30k raise for a new position at another agency, which ended up being 10-15k more than what I was asking for. I don’t want to seem ungrateful. The downside is the target bonus is only 5%, which is down from my current 10%.
